The ride reopened at the weekend and is being run independently for the first time in 25 years by the North Bay Railway Company.

The attraction used to be part of Kinderland and people could only go on it as part of their entry into the former children's playground.

David Humphreys, general manager of the North Bay Railway Company, said: "For it to be open now is a fantastic feeling having planned it for the last 18 months.

"We hope it will be a great attraction for residents and tourists. All we need now is some sunshine for people to really enjoy it."

The ride was built in 1932 as part of the development of Northstead Manor Gardens and is one of only two left operating in the country with the other in Wicksteed Park in Kettering.

Its refurbishment programme has come within the £150 million The Sands development.

The work included an overhaul of the superstructure and a new cable and motor system to pull the passenger car back up to the launch tower.

Among those enjoying the water chute were Ann Wood with her grandchildren Leia Rumney, seven, and Harvey Welford, four.

Mrs Wood, of Langdale Road, said: "Kids will love it. When they walk through they will see it and definitely want to go on it."

It also brought back happy memories for Alan and Sheila Baud, of Avenue Victoria.

Mr Baud said: "It was 25 years ago since we last went on it and it's nice to see it back in operation."

The ride will be open throughout the summer on weekends, bank holidays and every day during the school holidays.

The company also points out that the railway is run with the help of the Friends of the North Bay Railway and new members are welcome.
