SCARBOROUGH'S new Lifeboat Princess was crowned in front of more than a hundred people at a sparkling ceremony last night.
Twenty three girls made it to the final of the Evening News and RNLI competition which was held at the Spa.

Eleven-year-old Alisha Berry scooped the princess role and Kirsty Garwood, nine, and Sian Ackroyd, nine, won the two maid of honour titles.

After Barrowcliff Junior School pupil Alisha received her Lifeboat Princess sash and tiara she said: "I just cannot believe it. I am so shocked.

"I did not expect this at all. I have had a fantastic night and the thing I am looking forward to most is travelling on the lifeboat.

"Hopefully I can help raise lots of money for the lifeboat station."
Alisha's mum Leanne said she did not know her daughter had entered the competition and only found out when she was told she had made the final.

She said: "This was all Alisha's idea and I was really shocked when I got a phone call saying she had reached the final.

"I am absolutely over the moon that she has won. This will mean everything to her and I am very proud."

Northstead school pupil Kirsty said she could not wait to spend her prize money and Saxophonist Sian said it was a "dream come true."
The event was sponsored by Polar Ford in Seamer Road and general manager Paul McCormick was one of the judges.

Children's favourite Magic Mike compered the evening.

He said: "This is a fantastic competition and it has been a great night. The girls have done so well and have shown great enthusiasm."

Last year's princess Ellana Mae Barger, 10, and her maid of honours Sophie Wilson, 10 and Olivia Long, 12, were also at the event.

Gladstone Road Junior pupil Ellana said: "I had a fantastic year being the lifeboat princess. It is great to the support the lifeboat crew who do so much for Scarborough and have saved so many lives.

"The best part was definitely going on the lifeboat. Hopefully this year's princess will enjoy it too."

The princess won £75 and the maids of honour £50 each. They will all also have their picture taken by a professional photographer.

The three girls will represent the RNLI during this summer's Lifeboat Weekend and for the rest of the year.

The competition was judged by Brenda Horton from the RNLI, Shirley Sheader from the Leeds Arms, Sue Wilkinson from the Evening News and Paul McCormick from Polar Ford.
