FUTURIST fans were out in force yesterday to influence Scarborough Council's thinking on the fate of the theatre – and to retain its capacity for pulling in the big names.
Dozens packed the council chamber's public gallery – a rare sight at meetings in the borough – to support the fight to retain it.

The council has now formed a task group to discuss the future of the Futurist – one that could allow for a new or refurbished theatre, but could also see it be demolished to make way for a nightclub, restaurant or car park, among other options.

Campaigner Patricia David addressed the authority's corporate strategy overview and scrutiny committee and told members:

"If a new independent structural survey shows it is not financially viable to restore the present building, then a new modern 'Futurist' of comparable size should be built as an integral part of the area development.

"Building with a theatre should be the number one priority for the future prosperity of this town. Building without a theatre should not be negotiable – it should not even be an option."

Her speech was greeted with applause from the public gallery.

Committee members welcomed the move to form a task group – and expressed a near-unanimous desire to be part of it.

Cllr David Jeffels, a former cabinet member for tourism and culture, said he felt a case could be made for involving theatrical impresarios on the task group. He added: "This is a very important site – we've got to make sure we get it right. The task group should start with a blank piece of paper and take all views into account."

An Independent Structural Survey, A Consultation, A Task Group and a One penny sheet of blank paper.

Apart from the blank piece of paper I would not have another penny piece spent on this devious ploy from SBC to demolish the theatre regardless of public or any other opinion.

If SBC are prepared to sell the historic Town Hall then it is obvious that nothing in the town is any longer sacred, as for Foxy saying "We will not sell our souls" I think its a bit late Benchmark already own it, will they now be given the heart of the town also?.

Allowing SBC to create a "task group" to sweep the whole affair under the carpet until the fuss had died down ... sorry I meant discuss the future of the venue keeping all options open ... was surely the last outcome they wanted.

Some sensible comments in the video by the way, both Ms David and Mr Stead came over very thoughtful and sincere.

#3 Good questions. The Futurist may be demoloished to make way for a "nightclub, restaurant or car park", or even more scary "other options".

Maybe Cllr Jeffels (or Martin Herron) could advise us, from whence the suggestions about nightclubs, restaurants and car parks have come? From the Council? From planning applications? From secret meetings in smoke-filled rooms? Somebody from the SEN obviously knows these are options being discussed, which given the SEN's support for the campaign makes it a bit odd we're not given a bit more information on the origin of these "options".

And of course, may I wonder out loud what the "other options" are? Just a guess, but would a block of luxury flats be one of them? They could call it the South Bay Complex!

@5 - yes, that's right.

Which is why I believe the existing building should be pulled down BUT with the sole purpose of clearing a site to build a new 2000+ seat theatre & maybe an additional smaller cinema.

A car park???????????????????????????

Thought the grand £10million improvements to the Spa was going to help sort out the underground car park... No need to build another cos there is nowt to come to Scarborough for.. SBC are sorting that One by One. Kinderland, watersplash, corner complex, futurist?????

A CAR PARK ??????
I can only assume this is for the empty park and ride buses driving around town.
A NIGHT CLUB ?????
How many more late night drinking venues does a town this size need?
A RESTAURANT ????
To hold how many.
A THEATRE ????
To attract top artists and crowds of all ages the whole year.
Ooops forgot we're trying to get rid of one aren't we !!!

8 Yes why not a car park? Holidaymakers can then park on the South Bay and catch the bus round to The Sands. A sort of Park and Ride for the North Bay. Of course, people wanting to use the South Bay can still park along the Foreshore all day if they are members of the right lodge.

The article begins "Futurist fans were out in force", but I can only count 18 and that includes the people who run it. I fear the worst.
