The two organisations joined forces to rescue three "casualties" in the North and South Bays in the rain and fog yesterday morning.

In the South Bay a dummy was used to represent a person unconscious and face down in the sea.

It was plucked from the water by members of the coastguard, who brought it on to the beach as the inshore lifeboat team arrived.

Both groups administered CPR on a separate dummy before putting the other one on to a stretcher to be taken back to the lifeboat house.

Coastguards also dealt with the casualty's distressed relative, played by another member of the coastguard, on the West Pier who was threatening to go into the water.

In the North Bay, coastguards had to rescue a man from the sea who had been drinking and was aggressive.

The casualty was armed with a bottle and the team had to negotiate with him before saving him.

At the same time, the inshore lifeboat was called to a casualty with a broken leg on the Mascus Rocks near the Sea Life Centre.

They assessed his injuries and returned to the beach for more crewmen before treating his injuries and recovering him from the rocks by stretcher.

Both casualties were played by RNLI crewmen.

Steve Fawcett, station officer for Scarborough Coastguard, said: "I'm very proud of both services for the way they worked together for a very safe and successful outcome of the training exercise. We hope to work with the RNLI crew again shortly for another exercise, and I'd like to say a big thankyou to everybody involved."
