A CAR parked on a grass verge in Filey Road did not deter workers from painting double yellow lines.

The determined contractors painted around the vehicle and plan to go back and finish the job as soon as possible. A bemused onlooker said: "I can't believe they've painted around it – it's just like something out of 'That's Life'!

"A blue Rover has been parking there for weeks. Drivers have been having to pull out and cross the white line to get round it. It should have been moved ages ago."

John Riby, Scarborough Council's head of technical services, said: "Contractors decided to paint the lines on either side of the car and fill in the gap when the space became available.

"The car has been legally parked there and will continue to be as long as there's a gap in the lines. The council is not allowed to remove the car – the police will have to ask the owner to move it if necessary."

ha ha evening news what a funny story, but don't you think its rather irresponsible considering the car you mentioned was forcing motorists directly into the path of oncoming traffic coupled with the low sun in the late mornings at this time of year making it actually very difficult to see if there is any oncoming traffic to avoid, never mind the car has been moved now you're only three days late this time shouldn't you consider calling this paper the scarborough weekend news

I dont think the council are at fault here, if they dont have the powers to remove the car they can only paint yellow up to and beyond.

What does concern is why no action has been taken to the driver if tehy were causing an obstruction and forcing other drivers into on coming traffic

"Drivers have been having to pull out and cross the white line to get round it. "

Mind you if we didnt have the bus lane drivers on the other side wouldn't be having to drive further into the road. Perhaps in hindsight the yellow liens should have been in place soon after the bus lane

I do have a lot of sympathy for the owner of the blue car. I travel on Filey Road on a daily basis and yes, the car does cause an obstruction for traffic leaving the town centre when it's busy, but what else can the owners do?

There is a disabled badge in the window of the car, so the owner obviously has limited mobility. There isn't a driveway for him/her to park on. If the owner leaves the car parked on the (now newly) painted double yellows (as they are allowed to, being disabled) it causes an obstruction, and risks damage to the car from other road users getting too close when trying to overtake it. (The wing mirror already seems to have taken a few knocks during this week).

Today the owner parked the car on the grass verge, to avoid blocking the lane, and guess what? It was given a PARKING TICKET!!

Unbelievable!

#6 besides car control being able to drive means abiding by rules and regulations set out in order that all road users can travel safely, this persons disrespect for these rules and regulation surely puts this persons right to hold a licence in question, would you still defend them if someone gets injured as a result of this selfishness?

The grass verge is still the highway. The yellow line prohibits parking on that side of the highway along the specified length.

The vehicle owner should apply to Highways for a driveway crossing the verge to her property. They may have discounts available for drivers with mobility passes.

Any driver can be prosecuted for causing an unnecessary obstruction, irrespective of whether there are yellow lines on the road.

#6 - why not? I agree with #7 and 8. Parking on the grass verge is illegal, for us all.
