A SUPERMARKET internet battle is breaking out in Scarborough after York-based Asda launched 80-mile round trip home deliveries.
The store does not have a Scarborough outlet and is driving in the goods from York – taking on 10 extra workers to cope with the demand.

The move gives Scarborough shoppers access to four national food stores – Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda which offer on-line shopping – and Morrisons which does not have the facility.

Asda's Walmart owners, the world's largest retailer, say the economic slowdown has sent cash-conscious shoppers rushing to its stores. It has already made its first delivery in Scarborough with the firm saying it has been overwhelmed by the response. Spokeswoman Jacky Allen says the first customer in Scarborough was Mandy Berkeley, of North Street.

Mrs Allen said: "We're very pleased that Mrs Berkeley was our first customer and to help her celebrate the fact we presented her with a bottle of Champagne and a bouquet of flowers. She said she was delighted with the service we provided and will be using it again."

Tesco believe it has nothing to fear from Asda's new service. A spokesman said: "We are the UK's number one online grocery delivery service, delivering to more than 95 per cent of the population.

"We happily welcome any competition."

Bosses at Sainsbury's are also confident that its internet sales will continue to grow.

A spokesman from the firm said: "Our online home shopping operation has had an outstanding year. Sales grew by 43 per cent.

"Our service It covers 85 per cent of UK postcodes and delivers to more than 90,000 customers each week, 40 per cent more than the previous year.

"We are expanding the number of delivery slots available to customers."

I have used Asda several times over the years mainly clothes and the odd shop whilst I was there, dont buy much frozen due to the distance.

I didnt find Asda any cheaper than Morrisons, I have also used Asda at Hull too

I have no interest in Morrisons only I am a avid bargain hunter

I also hold no brief for Morrisons (or Tesco, Proudfoot etc) but the way Asda treat their staff is a disgrace. Long hours, low wages and summary sackings. Morrisons at least have a (let's call it) European attitude to their employees rather than the American model so loved by Walmart/Asda. For that reason alone, I will never go near an Asda store.

The question of supermarket pricing is interesting.

I went into Aldi yesterday because of the national Press publicity to the effect that people were going there as they were so much cheaper than the big four.

Some items were definitely cheaper, but you have to shop selectively. Basics like cooking oil and long life milk were much more expensive that Morrisons and Sainsbury's for example.

Whats interesting is how did SEN get this story anyhow. Was it a case of Asda contact them, customer etc. A great way nonetheless for getting free publicity without paying a sausage

I contacted the SEN thought it was good news, we only found out by accident that ASDA were noe delivering here. We would normally go over once a month to do a big shop. So for us it was cheeper to have it delivered and save the cost of my fuel.

How incredible this story is.
I live in Waterloo, Lambeth, London. Less than 2 miles away in Southwark, up the New Kent Road (same postcode SE1) is an Asda store, will they come and deliver within that little distance? no way, im told "we dont deliver in that area yet" for 2 years i have been told that.
What i would not give to be back living with decent sensible people like us northerners.

Well done Asda up North.

Well, for one, I think it's a disgrace. if they want to ply their goods here, then they should put their hands in their pockets, and build a store here by the coast!

Each to his own CrossgateView, I for one will continue to use, saves me the trip and associated headaches. If you don't like don't use

#7 CrossgateView: Asda did want to build here many years ago, on the old Plaxton's site on Seamer Road.

It would have been great for the town at the time, but the then Mayor used his extra vote against the store being built.
