HOLIDAYMAKERS have been left scratching their heads in confusion at this Scarborough information board.
The board, next to the Grand Hotel in one of the busiest tourist spots in the town, directs people to several long closed and even demolished visitor attractions including Marvel Leisure and Amusement Park which closed in 1999.

Among other non existent landmarks listed are the Corner Complex, Atlantis, Kinderland and Wood End Museum.

A pointer sign next to the board causes more confusion for visitors directing them to the Wood End Museum, which is closed and now houses Woodend Creative Workspace.

The sign also points them to a closed tourist information centre near to the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Officers at Scarborough Council are now reviewing the quality of signs in the town.

Cllr David Jeffels, the council's cabinet member for tourism and leisure services, said: "There are signs that have been there for quite a long time and do need replacing.

"A group has been set up to look at the existing signs and adjust those that are out of date and look at ways of promoting the towns attractions.

"We do need some better signing for the theatre and holiday attractions in general in the town."

They are considering using stand alone "advertisement drums" which are circular in shape and posters can be put around them.

Another plan is to use "attractively designed banners" which could be fitted to lamp posts.

Cllr Jeffels hopes to have the promotional items in place for the start of next Easter.

He added: "It's so important that we do promote our attractions."

Its nice that the new signs will be put in place by easter - but what about now??? they should at least cover the old ones up.

By Easter? It really takes seven months for this 'group' to figure out which signs are out of date and replace them?

Councillor Jeffries also states we need to promote our attractions....we'd have to find some first, surely, unless he wants to point people in the direction of The Sands resort.

I'm trying to imagine signs circa 2018 - all hanging on the 25 sets of traffic lights and pointing towards disussed and derelict park and ride sites and a town centre full of empty shops. Are our council really so involved with Health and Safety, Political Correctness and Environmental issues that the real world is simply not on their agenda? Please will somebody take the responsibility from them and hand it to the the Regeneration committee. They've done more for this town in 3 years than our council and its 'tendered contractors' could do in 10 years with the potential to acheive even more given the opportunity.

SSTE: Great letter, this could all come true!

I am very excited that there could be a new map near the Grand Hotel and maybe our missing road, that's been here over 30 years, may be on it.

I won't hold my breath over this and the signs being altered. Look how many years it took to correct the sign near St Thomas Street.

Typical of the leisure & Tourism services.

The signpost that was near the start of King Street and the St. Nicholas Street junction had been out of date for years. Whether it has been rectified or not I do not know.

What a statement from the member for Tourism & Leisure, Cllr. Jeffels. The excuses he trots out beg belief for someone who is supposed to be on top of his job.

But, I suppose it is typical. These signs should have been updated for this season not next. They should have been checked every year. How long have some of these places been closed or in fact disappeared ?.

A group has been set up to look at the existing signs !!!!!! You couldn't make it up really. All it needs is a man in a van with camera, paper and biro going round and checking. Quite simple.

A group has been set up to look at the existing signs, another group has also been set up to ensure all councillors, officers and staff at SBC are aware we are now in the year 2008 and what day it is.

If the above measurers do not work it is rumoured a team of consultants will be engaged to bring the whole council, kicking and screeming into the present century.

I can see the sense of humour coming through in the statements above but this is worth taking seriously. Its no good dragging them all into 2008. By the time its been discussed, agreed to consultancy, tenders put out to comply with EU, national goverment as well as local rules and policy, then finally agreed who to spend our taxes on, it will be 2018.
We all need to have them removed from power and stop them from making any more blatently obvious cockups and lets have somebody who can put it right, the way local people and visitors would like it - and sooner rather than later !!!! A private business wouldnt last above 12 months if it was run like this

SSTE, nice one, by 2018 SBC will in probability be bankrupt, paying out the pensions to their retired, inept, disasterous council officers.

The councillors will also have contributed to this state of affairs with their 8%per anum allowance increase.
