VICTORIA Road could collapse after a water main burst and affected voids under the road surface.
Traffic is being diverted along Tindall Street and pedestrians, including residents, are being refused permission to walk up the road for their own safety.

Mike Cook, Scarborough Council's senior highway inspector, said the council had been alerted to the problem at around 3.30pm yesterday.

He told the Evening News: "There has been a burst water main, which is quite extensive. We believe there are voids under the carriageway. It is possible the road could collapse.

"The road will be closed until work is completed. We don't know the extent of the damage underneath as yet so the closure could last as long as two days."

A shopkeeper said he found the extent of the flood worrying. Steve Golder, of Northern Domestics, said: "The water's up to our kerb now and there are gallons of it rushing down a drain 10ft away from our front door.

"If the drain can't cope we'll be flooded so it is a concern – we've not been asked to evacuate as yet. This has never happened before."

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said workers were on site just after 4pm and they acted quickly to isolate the burst main.

The water supply was turned back on just after 5pm but a few people in the area may have been left without water for several hours.

Victoria Road is closed from the junction with Tindall Street to Barwick Street.

I first heard of this at 0630 this morning on the BBC TV Yorkshire regional news.

It was announced "Victoria Rd is closed to traffic in both directions".

Since when has traffic flowed in both directions in Victoria Rd, or is there a glitch in traffic lights making motorists do this.

Two guesses who provided this information to the BBC at Leeds?, yes you guessed it.

From SEN, Letters.

I DO NOT BELIEVE IT!!, a SBC councillor saying something sensible, I bet Tom Fox wont like this.

Credit must go to these councillors.

LETTER.
Cllr Popple has a valid point, perhaps it is time we had an all inclusive town meeting on this issue, and why not on other issues that face this town and borough as a whole.

We as councillors are elected to represent the views of our residents, we as a council should be communicating more directly with residents and be willing to listen to what they have to say.

Only 3 comments, if this had happened outside the Newcastle Packet it would have had dozens.

#2: If my memory serves me right, Victoria Road run's down to Aberdeen Walk. There is an upper and lower Victoria Road, so part of it is two way traffic. So the new's report was correct.

LT,5.
Like the report Lady T you are also wrong, the site of the water main burst is in upper Victoria Rd, which is a one way system.

Driving down Victoria Road as I do alot during the day - I think that the real reason for the collapse is the single lane of traffic that is caused by the inattention and total disregard of the laws from the 'older generation' who park up on the left hand side (the right side is legal parking!) to go shopping! Usually with no blue badge - although I did see an older gent using his time clock to let the wardens know when he would return by - how considerate on yellow lines again - warden - not a one in sight!!!
