MOTORISTS in Scarborough are being warned of further delays as essential work is carried out on the town's traffic lights.

The work, which is part of the continuing development of the Scarborough Integrated Transport Scheme (SITS), will be carried out at two further sites in the town.

Work on the lights at the junction between Seamer Road and Falsgrave Road will sta
rt today and is due to be finished by tomorrow.

This will be followed by a similar upgrade to the set of lights at the junction between Falsgrave Road and West Parade Road – the entrance to Sainsbury's supermarket – next Wednesday and Thursday.

Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Council's technical services manager, said: "These latest works come at a time when the Scarborough Integrated Transport Scheme is nearing completion.

"The work involves replacing the signal controllers and this will mean switching the existing signals off. During these periods temporary traffic signals will be in operation and some additional delays may be expected.

"I ask motorists to choose alternative routes where possible during this time. Some remaining works to signals at the Valley Road and Seamer Road junction, which are not seen as pivotal to the SITS, will be carried out early in the new year."

Traffic lights changes, I thought that is what they were supposed to do, change, from red to amber and then green and visa versa.

But alas not in the case of the Scarborough ones, lets face it this load of what can only be described as out dated, second hand tat, should never have been bought, let alone installed.

Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Council's technical services manager, said "I ask motorists to choose alternative routes where possible during this time", change your routes indeed! how on earth can you change your route to get into the town avoiding these ludicrous lights.

I guess the reprogramming is essential to the system to work properly, but i am totally baffled as to how the lights at seamer road/valley road are not important. This set are right in the middle of everything, seamer road to falsgrave to valley road etc. Mymain gripe with the lights, and this goes back many years, is that they are THICK! I hope now the reprogramming will stop the ridiculous situation, particularly on an evening, where the lights turn to red, you stop, and another direction gets green to let lots of fresh air through. If this continues the system is a 100% failure.

I agree with CrossgatesView re the Seamer Rd / Valley Rd lights not being included in the scheme. However, when they finally do get round to doing them PLEASE can they include a phase to allow West Bank traffic to get out. At the moment this road is uncontrolled but is right on the junction.

When we drivers choose alternative routes, as requested by the council, for example to bypass the Sainsburys lights....will SEN then do a shock horror report on how Wykeham street has once again become a 'ratrun'?

A recent BBC programme on Traffic Lights in London the junctions were all watched from a set of CCTV screens and the lights adjusted by Operators in the room.
The expert said it was impossible to operate sets of lights by computer ( the Scarborough model) since traffic flows varied almost constantly throughout a network of traffic lights.
We seem to have a conflict of facts,SBC OFFICIALS are telling us all our new lights will be computer adjusted yet another Expert says it cannot be done.
I wonder who is correct? Did the SBC seek a second opinion? Can't wait till next summer.

When I saw the first line saying 'Essential Works', I thought "Oooo Goody, They're taking the lights out".

That would be about the only acceptable essential work required on the lights.

Can anyone see why the council are putting more buses on the roads with the park and ride scheme and altering all the roads to suit the buses when there is already a perfectly good rail line from Mere Valley to Town Centre - all it needed was a platform building and a tram system put on the line.

A Tram system Seaho??

You mean use the already existing free flowing rail ines that have been there for the past century??

That would be too easy...and too cheap!

today i made a delivery in Grimsby, while speaking to the customer, he said he had stayed in S'boro in mid Sept, booked 3 days as a break. He said that by day 2 he wanted to go home, but as he had paid for himself and family he stayed, BUT, they will not be coming back here again. The place has gone to ruins with traffic congestion, when i mentioned the lights, he burst out laughing, saying he had never seen anything like it before, in Grimsby they only have a few sets of lights, but plenty of roundabouts and the traffic is free flowing all the time.
So well done SBC another satisfied tourist that you have put off.
