PEOPLE offering cars for sale along a stretch of Seamer Road in Scarborough could be hit with a £1,000 fine.
The area outside the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, opposite the former BP garage, has long been a favourite spot for private sellers.
But Scarborough Council has now served a prohibition notice which means that under the terms of a Street Trading Order, people could be fined heavily for leaving their vehicles marked "For Sale" in the spot.
People attending meetings at the Jehovah's Witness Hall have often been forced to park in neighbouring streets such as Westbourne Park and St James's Road. However, a spokesman for the hall said the cars have never been too much of a nuisance.
He said: "I've noticed the cars parked outside but they have been parked legally and have not caused a problem."
Bruce Bedford, Scarbor-ough Council's technical services manager, said: "This part of Seamer Road is a 'prohibited street' as far as street trading is concerned, under a well established Street Trading Order that affects many of the main roads of the town.
"Cars for sale fall under this restriction, therefore due notice was given.
"We cannot discuss any individual conviction cases."
