PEOPLE offering cars for sale along a stretch of Seamer Road in Scarborough could be hit with a £1,000 fine.
The area outside the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, opposite the former BP garage, has long been a favourite spot for private sellers.

But Scarborough Council has now served a prohibition notice which means that under the terms of a Street Trading Order, people could be fined heavily for leaving their vehicles marked "For Sale" in the spot.

People attending meetings at the Jehovah's Witness Hall have often been forced to park in neighbouring streets such as Westbourne Park and St James's Road. However, a spokesman for the hall said the cars have never been too much of a nuisance.

He said: "I've noticed the cars parked outside but they have been parked legally and have not caused a problem."

Bruce Bedford, Scarbor-ough Council's technical services manager, said: "This part of Seamer Road is a 'prohibited street' as far as street trading is concerned, under a well established Street Trading Order that affects many of the main roads of the town.

"Cars for sale fall under this restriction, therefore due notice was given.

"We cannot discuss any individual conviction cases."

Its a shame it has come to this, yes its wrong running a business from the street selling cars, I note there are a few jaguars cars for sale dotted around the streets too, Filey road.

However the people who us Jehovah's Witnesses are a nuisance to the residents of surrounding streets as often residents cant find a place to park near there house because its taken up by people using 4x4's who use the church, so spare a thought for people who live in that area

This street selling has gone on for years in the Falgrave and Stepney Road area. It is not fair to other garages who sell car's as they have high overheads to pay.

#1: Shrek does it matter what car a person drives to attend their church? Why single out the one's who have a 4x4?

in my eyes if you pay you road tax and you have paid your parking dues then you can park your car where u like and can put any sigh in it if you like, since when has it been a crime to put a for sale sign in your car, whatever next, banning for sale signs on houses. Yet again just another case of the council having far to much time on there hands!!!

Lady Taurus, No it doesn't matter what cars people drive, I was mealy passing on my observation that it seems most of the cars they drive are 4x4

Still I bet the owners who use the church wouldn't like it if people starting filling there streets with cars and preventing them from parking near there house, not that it effects me, just I know some people who live close by and the street is terribly to park on a evening when the church is open.

I find there most problems caused by drivers round the corner outside the chippy and Pizza place at the end of Falsgrave road. I am often blocked from going down seamer road on a evening because drivers cant be bothered to walk 20 yards to the takeaway.

What will it take to resolve that problem loose of life because a emergency vehicle cant get by?

#6 Shrek: I agree people do seem to be too lazy to walk to the take away's and they seem to get away with illegal parking all the time.

The emergency vehicle's drive on the opposite side of the road in the day time. They would have a very long delay if they had to wait at the light's, to get by.

As for the church congregation parking near their church, the same could be said of anyone who goes to the Theatre or other venue in town.

#3 Benny: It is not just one car that is left on the road with a sale sign on it, it is several. We have seen them all over town when out walking.

I also think it isn't the same thing as having a "For Sale" board on a house. The board is usually sited on the owners property, so not causing upset to anyone.

I seem to recall an article some weeks back on this very subject and that one council was actually fining one person under some law, rather than often is the case traders doing this.

They are plenty of places to sell there cars on net and publications, so why dont they do that? or is it a case of cash in hand no questions asked

Ref 3 'love that benny'

As explained in the article it is deemed illegal street trading. They are a nusiance wherever they are. Another spot is the kerb and grass at the North end of Old Scalby Road onto Scalby Road, almost opposite Lady Ediths Drive. Manor Road another where they seem to park up with 'Sale' notices in the windows.

As for No 6 'Shrek'. I totally agree, it is one area that needs to be sorted. It happens through the day as well with inconsiderate drivers parking up on from Pattisons to the Tap and Spile on double yellow lines while they go to the shops.

It would be beneficial to have an 'Enforcement Officer' on Falsgrave constantly for a time other than once in a blue moon. Even upto 8-00 pm.

It is like the outbound bus stops on Falsgrave. A layby is created and buses use it for a period of time. Then someone in their ultimate wisdom stops that and places bus stops where they cause more problems than they solve by moving them on towards the corner at times blocking the left filter lane at the lights for Seamer Road. That's logic !!!!!!!!!!!! But that is Scarborough Council.
