Published Date: 09 July 2008
RESIDENTS were kept awake into the early hours by roadworks at a town centre junction as Scarborough's road changes continue.
One man contacted the Evening News to say workers didn't start their shift on the Northway and Victoria Road junction until 10pm on Monday – finishing at about 2am yesterday.

He said: "I couldn't sleep because of all the noise and the flashing lig
hts. Surely they could have given more thought to the people who live around here."

The second of two night shifts took place at the junction last night.

Scarborough Council's transport chief Bruce Bedford said: "Times for this essential maintenance were fixed by contractors to reduce disruption to traffic and insure work is completed quickly."

Helen Watson, the council's principal engineer for design, said contractor Skanska had sent letters to residents and businesses in the area, warning that work was due to be carried out between 8pm and 6am on Monday and Tuesday. Other night work set to take place includes:

  • A64 Park and Ride approaches and entrance – July 8-11

  • Filey Road/Queen Margaret's Road – July 14

  • Seamer Road/Queen Margaret's Road – July 15

Scarborough has been plagued by roadworks since the beginning of the year as part of the town's £30.5 million integrated transport scheme which incorporates the two new park and ride sites, the new Osgodby bypass and a bus priority scheme.

Work is ongoing in Seamer Road, Victoria Road, Filey Road and Valley Road. Mr Bedford said work was running on schedule with all traffic signal sites set to be completed by the end of the month except for Seamer Road-Queen Margaret's Road, and Newborough-St Nicholas Street, which are due to be finished by mid-August.

But as these projects come to an end work will start on joining the Osgodby bypass and Filey Road, which could lead to even more traffic hold-ups.

Fantastic dont you think??
Seamer road will still be a bottle neck, because the park and ride is half way into town, we have traffic lights in silly little places such as the end of valley bridge, and for what? a park and ride scheme that no one will use - brilliant!!

this really is shocking, what amazes me is why were these road improvements done during the winter months, instead the great council plan all improvements to be done over the peak holiday season, yet again another fine mess

If these works had been done during the day there would have been complaints about the traffic congestion. So the contractor did them at night and there were complaints about the noise. If they had done the work earlier in the evening there would have been complaints about children being kept awake. I'm glad I'm not a contractor.

I was lucky enough to be working a night shift near to these roadworks. It is unbelievable to think that Scarborough Borough Council would allow any company to carry out roadworks that were not only loud but also shook nearby buildings in an area where residential properties outweigh the commercial at this time of night.

Nobody would have complained had these works been done during the daytime as the people of Scarborough are used to these roadworks now.

I only hope that when this work is all complete Scarborough Borough Council will launch a full investigation into why Bruce Bedford's department has spent money on some of the sites it has. The traffic lights at the end of Valley Bridge and on the junction of West Street and Prince of Wales Terrace are completely unnecessary. Everybody in Scarborough could see that both junctions were generally free flowing with little or no congestion at all. The decision to fund the work at those sites was at best ill-informed and at worst criminal.

Does anybody know where we can see the 'Master Plan' of all the roadworks, transport system proposals etc. Or, like the Sands, is it in the process of being written?

As Richard Littlejohn would say, "You could not make it up".

Northway/Victoria Road must be the longest worked on traffic light system in the country. Obviously no one that works at the Town Hall lives within ear shot of the night work or it would have been done during the day.

Let us hope the National Press get hold of this fiasco and highlight Bruce Bedford's department for what it would seem to be, 'Not fit for purpose'.

If anyone including Bruce Bedford believes this total system will actually work once completed then they are in La-La land and totally out of the loop. What we had before in the traffic light system did not work correctly so heaven help us with this.

The uneccessary traffic lights that have been installed around the town on someones idea begs belief. Along with the most ill conceived Park & Ride ever located for service to a town, Seamer Road.

Do the people in post actually know what they are doing.

This fiasco makes the Marine Drive project pale into insignifcance.

Amaroo#6 I think SBC are the only people in this town who really do believe that all these added traffic lights, plus the Park & Ride will be a success.

Let's all wait and see, what happens, as I'm not convinced it will be a success.

If it isn't I suppose also that someone will retire with a huge pension and avoid been held to account.

'Lady Taurus'

As you say, possibly only those within the SBC think the new system will work. Mind I bet if we were flies on the wall in some offices in the Town Hall relevant to the project, we might overhear a different story.

You are certainly correct on the last paragraph of Post 7.
