RESIDENTS were kept awake into the early hours by roadworks at a town centre junction as Scarborough's road changes continue.
One man contacted the Evening News to say workers didn't start their shift on the Northway and Victoria Road junction until 10pm on Monday – finishing at about 2am yesterday.
He said: "I couldn't sleep because of all the noise and the flashing lig
hts. Surely they could have given more thought to the people who live around here."
The second of two night shifts took place at the junction last night.
Scarborough Council's transport chief Bruce Bedford said: "Times for this essential maintenance were fixed by contractors to reduce disruption to traffic and insure work is completed quickly."
Helen Watson, the council's principal engineer for design, said contractor Skanska had sent letters to residents and businesses in the area, warning that work was due to be carried out between 8pm and 6am on Monday and Tuesday. Other night work set to take place includes:
- A64 Park and Ride approaches and entrance – July 8-11
- Filey Road/Queen Margaret's Road – July 14
- Seamer Road/Queen Margaret's Road – July 15
Scarborough has been plagued by roadworks since the beginning of the year as part of the town's £30.5 million integrated transport scheme which incorporates the two new park and ride sites, the new Osgodby bypass and a bus priority scheme.
Work is ongoing in Seamer Road, Victoria Road, Filey Road and Valley Road. Mr Bedford said work was running on schedule with all traffic signal sites set to be completed by the end of the month except for Seamer Road-Queen Margaret's Road, and Newborough-St Nicholas Street, which are due to be finished by mid-August.
But as these projects come to an end work will start on joining the Osgodby bypass and Filey Road, which could lead to even more traffic hold-ups.
