ANGRY residents and frustrated surfers have called for action after an all-night rave in Cayton Bay left the beach "trashed".
Police were called to the beach at Killerby Cliff on Sunday after a large group of people had spent the night camping on the sand. Josh Ireland, who works at Cayton Bay Surf Shop, said: "We turned up to go for a surf and there had been a rave.

There was a load of litter all over the place. "All the cars were parked in front of the barrier so we had to get the police to move them on so the car park could open.

"The beach was a mess as if it had been trashed. If people are going to come down and use the beach then they should take their rubbish away with them."

Local residents were kept up during the night due to the noise coming from the beach. Robert Nassau, who lives above Cayton Bay on Kirby Cliff, said: "We could not sleep all night. "The music didn't stop until seven in the morning.

"We don't mind small parties on the beach but this was huge. It was an organised event and there must have been around 100 people there. It was absolutely horrendous.

"There were about 17 cars parked so we could not get out of our private road. What if an ambulance had to get through? The council were alerted but no traffic warden was sent.

"More needs to be done to stop these things getting out of hand like it did."

A police spokesman said: "We went there for safety reasons. With it being a nice morning we knew a lot of people would be heading to Cayton Bay and we had to check that the litter – of which there was a lot – did not cause any danger to those visiting the beach."

Two separate groups camped on the beach during Saturday night. Robin Forlow, who is from Scarborough and was a member of one of the groups, said: "I have been camping on this beach for years and years and have never had any problems.

"We did have music last night but there was no trouble. Unfortunately people associate the word rave with drink and drugs, but this was more of a family event – we were celebrating someone's birthday.

"The other group who were here did not tidy up after themselves and left a lot of rubbish. That is the main problem, when people do not clear away their mess. We always ensure our site is clean before we leave, and quite often we have to clear up before we set up camp."
