Published Date: 19 November 2008
POLICE have condemned a "deliberate stunt" which has been posted on the You Tube website by a group of Scarborough youths.
The series of videos, called Scarborough Jackass, feature teenagers whipping and hitting each other, and jumping into bushes.

One of the stunts, which is believed to be fake, involves an innocent passer-by being attacked in a "Happy Slapping" style incident.

The victim is seen to fall immediately in the middle of the road.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Having viewed this particular piece of footage and putting it in context with the other video clips posted by this group, it has all the hallmarks of being a deliberate stunt with the apparent victim in on the act.

"However, if anyone has information that suggests this was actually an unprovoked assault on an innocent passer-by, then it must be reported to the police immediately.

"While this type behaviour appears to be a 'good laugh' to those involved, the participants must be mindful that their actions could cause fear and alarm to other members of the public who are not 'in on the joke'.

"Also, on a general point of health and safety, the type of stunts and deliberate acts of pain involved in these clips could result in serious injury and even loss of life if something went badly wrong.

"It also sets a poor example to the younger generation who could mimic the stunts and put themselves and their friends in danger as a consequence. For these reasons, it goes without saying that the police discourages this type of activity."

I have always lived in the hope of one day seeing a police officer on the streets of the town again but alas to no avail.

It has always made me think they must be busy bogged down by bureaucratic red tape and paper work and here we find that they are actually sat in their multi million hideyhole in Northway watching U-Tube.

Excellent move, first find some videos that were posted on YouTube three months ago, and then provide all the excuse they need to boast about it to their mates by actually printing the exact search term required to find the videos!

Nothing to see here... move along...

Well said both of you, a shame the Police have nothing better to do, and a shame there isn't any real news to print today - have Benchmark not sold another flat?

These jerks that do "Happy Slapping" must be fully aware that one day, their victim might just be a black belt in some martial art and might just do some "Happy rrrs kicking" of his own.

Or even how about some "Happy Retaliatory Throwing off Bempton Cliff"?

well done #1 and #3 for yet again turning it around to blame the police. You really must be a couple of scarborough half-wits. For gods sake the story quite clearly shows the police cant be arsed dealing with tripe like this put forward by other halfwits in the town who havent got a life. Theres plenty of police on the streets of scarborough i see them everyday etc etc and your police slagging posts are getting guite tiresome and boring. This a SEN initiated story cos theres nothing else going on, with a standard police reponse not vice versa. If you cant see that, well im lost for words.

Thanks for your kind words #7, however if you read the story you will the police spokeman talked about "putting it in context with the other video clips posted by this group", which suggests to my simple mind that they have in fact viewed the other clips referred to. As part of Operation Something-or-Other no doubt.

Well there you go #8 and I really wish I was lost for words. Scenario is, local SEN reporter trying to earn her worth cant think of what to write about. Some local halfwit tells her about the u tube crime of the century, SEN reporter looks at clips and thinks 'wow story of the year happy slapping in scarborough' - gets in touch with scarborough police station to report such terrible behaviour. Police humour the reporter by showing interest, look at the website and silently thinks 'what a load of pants - ive got better things to do - then release a statement further humouring local paper allowing naff story to be printed. They probably havent even looked at the other footage because its a load if tat and obvious its a set up and have got much better things to do.
Paper gets story of the year (slightly more interesting than 'man catches fish in harbour' and you lot get the opportunity to slag the police off from whatever angle you choose. Which yet again has happened. Good old Scarborough local mentality...cant beat it
