WEEKEND drivers had to contend with more chaos on Scarborough's roads as the town centre gridlocked with sheer volume of traffic.
Motorists were stuck for up to 40 minutes trying to exit North Street's NCP car park as stationary-car drivers hooted and people's patience became more and more frayed.

Traffic was backed up along North Street, St Thomas Street and Castle Road for the majority of Saturday afternoon.

NCP car park line manager Keith Palmer had to direct traffic away from the car park in North Street because it was full.

He said he thought the problem could have stemmed from part of Marine Drive being shut off.

He added: "But if that is the case, why haven't they got traffic wardens or police sorting the traffic flow out?"

The weekend's events included Scarborough Fair in William Street coach park, which reduced the amount of parking space in town, and the Fat Face extreme mountain biking, which closed off part of Marine Drive.

The gridlock added to drivers' increasing frustrations towards Scarborough's new traffic system.

There is ongoing controversy in Scarborough over the number of sets of traffic lights which have been put up as part of the town's new integrated transport scheme which includes the creation of a new park and ride site in Seamer Road, near Deans Garden Centre.

Over the past few months new traffic lights have been installed at the end of Valley Bridge, leading to Ramshill, in Filey Road and at Queen Margaret's Road roundabout.

More gridlock on our roads, by Kirsty Beever.

No disrespect to Kirsty or her report but it looks like Kirsty has found a job for life at the SEN, just doing a monday report on the towns weekend gridlock as I am sure this will go on forever and a day.

With the time for unwary xmas shoppers coming into town fast approaching
the gridlock will suit SBC down to the ground, with their policy of make every penny possible out of the motorist.

Congestion charging is on it's way, gridlocks are caused by congestion and as we know from past experience the Congestion Charge is one of the biggest money spinners a council can introduce.

Everybody pays regardless to come into the town, then SBC get your parking fee or give you fine for parking illegaly, they just cannot lose, even though it was they who caused the whole problem in the first place, GOOD INIT?.

Why have we not heard from the Cllrs who are responsible for this alarming state of affairs?

Eveyone can see this is not the usual traffic jams, it is something much worse, that will kill this town off.

Have any of the Cllrs other than Cllr Norman Grundy travelled on any of these routes? If I was on the SBC I would be out there finding out how bad the situation is. Then deciding how to put things right.

All there is from the people responsible is a deathly silence. Come on all you Cllrs give the residents and visitor's an explanation. Other than it has to work!!!!

Good point AB. SBC creates a problem that didn't exist by closing off vital link roads, adding speedhumps of which some are illegally severe (read eu regs on max heights, etc) then installing traffic lights which revert to red for the main roads.
It is all designed to gridlock the town. Maybe SBC will apply for congestion charging soon. The envoronmentalistas who claimed victory in calming Wykeham Street will love that.

Just another thought. All these speedhumps which are there to save lives and protect the planet - don't. Save lives? -no. London council have a report that states for every one life saved eight are lost because of delays speedhumps cause to the emergency services. Save the Planet? - no. Drivers speed up and slow down over speedhumps which increase fuel consumption, emmissions, not to mention increased polution in the production of car parts damaged by driving over the speedhumps are the corrct restricted speed.

Re4, Well said Lady T.

SBC councillors are bullies and like all bullies they do the dirty deed, then once discovered they run and hide.

I think their silence says more than any comment could, how could they possibly justify pure lunacy.

This situation will get worse untill we the electorate go to the townhall enmass and protest against the idiots who are responsible, OUR COUNCILLORS.

couldn't help noticing that the bus lane on filey road appears to be in operation now and as far as this morning went it appeared to have been better that what motorists have had to deal with in previous weeks, well apart from the one selfish individual who insists on leaving their car parked and forcing vehicles heading out of town into the path of oncoming traffic heading into town, now that really is dangerous why wasn't this car moved before the bus lane opened its been there for weeks?
