CONTRACTORS have moved into a temporary compound alongside the A64 Scarborough to Malton road ahead of a major resurfacing scheme.

The work on the 1.9 mile – 3km – stretch of the route between Scampston and East Knapton is being carried out by Interserve Civils Ltd on behalf of the Highways Agency.

It is due to start today and involves resurfacing the road and laying anti-skid material on the bend at Scampston Park Bridge.

Road markings and cats'-eyes will be replaced and road signs updated and improved. The work is due to be completed by November 28.

Drainage in the grass verges will be upgraded to bring them up to standard and improve access.

Lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in operation between 8pm and 6am when traffic flows are lower. To limit delays the length of the works will be restricted to 300 metres at a time.

Project manager Steven Wright said: "The key benefit of this scheme will be improved safety provided by the new road surface, with targeted areas of increased skid resistance, refurbished road-markings, new cats-eyes and signs.

"Journey time reliability will also be improved as this refurbished section of road will be less prone to delays caused by maintenance works."

Drivers can get up-to-the-minute information by calling the Highways Agency Information Line on 08457 504030, or by accessing its website: www.highways. gov.uk

The first new road sign will probably read, SCARBOROUGH WELCOMES MOTORIST'S MONEY,
ALL OF IT.

To keep on Gurning: just because they don't *say* traffic lights are going up doesn't mean....

"Journey time reliability will also be improved as this refurbished section of road will be less prone to delays caused by maintenance works." - But surely these *are* maintenance works?

What is the use of doing any work to get driver's here quicker? Then they will have to sit in a traffic jam for at least half an hour, before getting parked.

It's sheer madness, however I'm all for any roads being made safer to drive on.

I hope they change the signs that read Scarborough to

Scarborough home of the traffic light

As mush as welcome any safety work and hell that road does need it in places, the a64 need to be made dual carriageway all the way up Rillington and beyond.

The cost of resurfacing has increased by 30% in recent years, because the Department for Transport specifies the latest "low noise" compound - presumably so that nearby rabbits can get a good night's sleep.
