USE it or you could lose it – that is the message from a hospital campaigner about the recently introduced free hospital shuttle bus to Scarborough.
"People are using it, but more need to know about it," said Jean Wormwell, the secretary of the Bridlington branch of Pager (Pensioners' Action Group East Riding).

"We have fought hard to get this free service between Bridlington and Scarborough h
ospitals and it is important that people use it if we are to keep it."

Introduced by the Scarbor-ough trust as a three-month pilot scheme at the beginning of June, the shuttle bus runs an hourly service for up to 15 passengers a time between the two sites from 7am to 8pm every day.

"It is vital as many people make use of it as possible because we do not know what is going to happen to services at Bridlington Hospital," said Mrs Wormwell.

"It is really just a question of people knowing it is there and getting used to it."

She said the bus saved people the cost of a taxi to Scar-borough and back and there were no parking problems.

The bus is for use by patients visiting clinics in Scarborough, carers, visitors and even staff. It is able to carry wheelchairs, guide dogs and has good access for people with disabilities.

A spokesman for the hospital trust said the service was being monitored and the more people use it the more chance there is of it staying.

The spokesman said: "We are very keen that this does become a permanent fixture. We need to see that people are not only using it but finding it effective."

Is this really the NHS 60 years on from it's conception, the Sca & N E Yorks NHS Trust Board are hell bent on closing Bridlington Hospital.

To suggest it's replacement should be a shuttle bus service is pure lunacy and what is to be done with the Hospital?.

This relatively modern hospital is to virtually become a day care centre and a Darzi style Polyclinic, so not only will Bridlington lose it's Hospital but it's GPs Surgeries as well.

Total, complete and absolute NHS lunacy but of course this could never happen in Scarborough, could it?.

York and North York’s NHS Primary Care Trust
‘Road show hits town, today’

Thursday 10th July 2008

Scarborough is today, to be hit by all the might the powerful PCT propaganda machine can muster, the Road Show and accompanying publicity team will do all in their power to persuade the people of Scarborough to except a Darzi Polyclinic in the town, their indoctrination of the towns people is to be held in the town centre.

This is just the beginning of one of the most expensive publicity campaigns the town has ever seen, today alone in the Brunswick Centre will cost you the tax payer thousands, add to this the cost they plan on spending with the Scarborough Evening News with a multi page pull out supplement and questionnaire, this is just the start of their campaign, or as many call their war of attrition in their drive to impose the Polyclinic on the people of the town.

Other services covered and financed by the PCT will have to endure further cuts in their budgets to pay for the annual upkeep of the Polyclinic, these include all hospitals, many of which are now being reduced to no more than day care centres, other big losers will be our GPs surgeries, with all in the vicinity of a Polyclinic becoming vulnerable to closure, the already abysmal and almost none existent dentistry service, the ambulance service, now almost unable to operate the emergency service to government guidelines will also be hit.

Is it really worth it to lose so much and gain so little?, the massive bureaucracy within the PCT wastes millions of pounds every year, today and in weeks to come hundreds of thousands of pounds of yours, the tax payers money, will be wasted on this campaign to give you a Polyclinic, that the vast majority, approx 95%, of the public do not want.

This is why in Scarborough and North York’s your life expectancy is 17 years less than other parts of the country, it is down to pure bureaucratic mismanagement and misjudgement, if for one minute the

Comment3 Cont!!

This is why in Scarborough and North York’s your life expectancy is 17 years less than other parts of the country, it is down to pure bureaucratic mismanagement and misjudgement, if for one minute the PCT think that we want to go to see an unknown GP in Tesco or the Brunswick Centre they must be raving mad.

This folks is where your taxes are being spent, not on front line staff and services, not on GPs surgeries, Hospitals, Dentistry or the Ambulance Service, no they are being wasted on propaganda to convince you that you want a multi million pound Polyclinc in the town centre.

Say a resounding NO to Lord Darzi and his ill conceived Polyclinics.

To get back to the Hospital bus service. No wonder people are not using this service, are they being told about it?

When my husband had to attend Bridlington Hospital, we were certainly not told about it. If we had been we would have been delighted to use it.

A few weeks ago this bus passed us on it's way to the Scarborough Hospital and we both said, when did that service start up. We were amazed to see it.

I must add we both thought the Bridlington Hospital and the staff there, were superb. Their treatment and the warm welcome we were given will stay with us.

We hope this fine hospital will remain as it is and not be changed to a Darzi clinic.

Blah, blah, blah.

John Palethorpe and his loons are on the soap box again. Keep everything the same! Don't change anything! If we shut our eyes very tight and cover our ears, and shout very loudly at the world then we can stop anything happening.

The sad fact is that Mr Palethorpe makes some salient points. Its true that life expectancy is lower in the north of England. But to suggest that this is due to PCT beauracracy is at best laughable, and at worst, dangerous and ill informed rabble rousing.

Life expectancy is lower in the north because of a complex number of factors, including socio-economic and lifestyle factors. The NHS has a role to play in treating illness, and health promotion, but is not a panacea.

To push the point further, he flimsiness of the supporting argument Mr Palethorpe uses is exposed. If it is the case that the current system is unsatisfactory then surely the introduction of a more flexible and accessible system is surely desirable. But despite his railings against the current system, he resists change even more strongly.

And no, I don't work for the health service/PCT or any supporting organisations. I'm not an NHS apologist, nor do I need to be - its true that there are many current failings.

Grow up Mr Palethorpe. And get yourself a proper argument before you spread your ill educated rantings any further.

I think Mr Palethorpe makes a lot more sense than you do, and doesn't have to resort to calling his opponents "loons" to get his point over.

As for the shuttle bus, yes it is absolutely ridiculous that in 2008 this is the best the NHS can do for the good folk of Brid, and frankly a scandal that the PCT is wasting money on a (let's call it) publicity campaign when the sick are being told to catch a bus 20-odd miles while their local hospital is closing.

#6 I agree with what you have said, why should someone who is ill or needs an operation, have to travel 20 miles from where they live. Then the hospital in their town is under threat of closure.

How come patients who live here are sent to Bridlington or Whitby and the patients from those places are sent elsewhere. it's like the mad movies!

It is a scandal and it is ridiculous.

A name thats not in use!,

oh come on, who wants to spend ages going round the houses on a little bus especially at stressful times such as a hospital visit, ok this is a goo idea for those that do not have their own transport but if you are fortunate enough to have a car in your household it is much better and more convenient to be dropped of by a loved one, and lets face it probably healthier too

Hi Kremble, many thanks for the publicity you are helping to add to our campaign against Darzi polyclinics, it is thanks to people like your good self commenting that keeps me motivated.

There are always two sides to every argument and I respect your point of view, misguided as it is.

If however you wish to malign my self and the members of our organisation, please have the good grace to give your name, your address and telephone number, as I am sure we would all appreciate debating with you further.

You will always be welcome to air your views publicly at any of our meetings and if you have the courage of your convictions you may come and see me personally at anytime.
