A TOP union official says the news print firm Greaves is to close its finishing and bindery plant in January is a "devastating blow for workers and their families".
Tony Burke, assistant general secretary of Unite, told the Evening News: "There have been 500 job loses in the print industry announced in the past two weeks. These are high skilled jobs which are not being replaced elsewhere in the industry.

"We
have held informal consultations with the company for some time and will enter into formal consultation next week. The redundancy package we have negotiated is above the statutory requirement but that will be of little consolation to our members." Cayton Ward councillor Anne Preston says she knows several people who are to lose their jobs when the finishing and binding plant closes. She said: "It was bad enough when the Havers Hill factory closed. This is a terrible blow for everybody who is affected by the closure."

Are you affected by the closure, what are your memories of Greaves, what do you think:

Obviously the hardest hit are the 500 who have lost there jobs at Greaves, but this will also have a massive effect to the Scaborough economy, as these are relatively well paid skilled workers for the area that have only Pindars as an alternative employment in the area. This would be a big job loss for a city let alone a small town. Has there been any action by central government, I doubt it.
The only way a geographically disadvantaged town like Scaborough is going to overcome these type of job losses, and for future growth, is for the council to demand grants and incentives off central government to attract businesses investing in Scarborough. The kind of grants that Scotland have been enjoying for so long.
