AS THE summer temperatures rise motorists are becoming increasingly frustrated at roadworks in and around Scarborough.
One driver, who would not give his name, contacted the Evening News to say he had been caught up in long delays every day last week in Seamer Road – one of the busiest commuter routes into the town.

And motorists said they had a sense of deja vu as work began again at the traffic lights at the junction between Dean Road and Castle Road.

But Scarborough Council has defended the essential work which is part of an on-going programme.

Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Council's technical services manager, said: "On the Seamer Road corridor there are two locations where work is ongoing.

"The junction works at Queen Margaret's Road will be completed by September.

"The works at the new park and ride site are undertaken by North Yorkshire County Council and the latest date for completion that we were given was mid July.

"As this has now passed we await further advice from the county council's contractor."

Mr Bedford said the Dean Road junction had not been dug up again. "The work was not completed previously, and an excavation was left open until such time as the underground cables could be reconnected to the new signals controller," he said. "This work is now being completed."

The council has kept motorists informed with regular bulletins in the Evening News detailing where the roadworks would be as work continues on Scarborough's Integrated Transport Scheme.

Significant roadworks have been taking place this year to ensure bus priority measures are put in place at key points when the park and ride schemes start in the autumn.

Bus lanes are planned as part of the scheme and one will cover the A165 Filey Road scheme from a new roundabout near Wheatcroft and St Martin's Schools playing fields and run towards the junction with Queen Margaret's Road.

My husband told me today when I got home at just before 4pm, that I'd been lucky to get on the number 2 bus as several had been missed during the afternoon.

The bus my husband went for earlier in the day never showed up, neither did the next one! So these road works are affecting everyone.

Or is it the new drivers that are not doing the correct runs? As my husband saw 2 number 15 buses following each other.

I feel so sorry for the elderly who can't walk, if left stranded in town.

"The junction works at Queen Margaret's Road will be completed by September". Just in time for the end of season.
"The works at the new park and ride site are undertaken by North Yorkshire County Council and the latest date for completion that we were given was mid July. In which year 2008 or 2009??, and if the traffic lights are anything like the ones on Cayton Low Road, then we are in trouble with long delays, the filter system has gone out of sync ( a bit like the council )

wonder why they couldn't just dig up the path and install the traffic lights on a rail going over the road to save all the roadworks now and in the future ? I have seen them in plenty of other towns.
They must be thousands cheaper to install and a lot faster to erect.

The road works at Seamer Road/Queen Margarets Road are simply a disgrace. The time they are taking cannot be defended by Bruce Bedford in any way at all. A third world country would not take this long with the road works that have been done/are being done in Scarborough.

Maybe if the workers did an 8 hour day and actually worked it may help.

I would not worry too much with the white elephant of the Seamer Road Park & Ride.

Bruce Bedford must be about down to the last page in his 'Excuse Book'. He would be better off with a 'Joke Book'.

Will all this be any good ? I doubt it. Just justifying jobs at the Town Hall, nothing more. The town will still snarl up in the same places, the traffic lights will not run in sequence to allow traffic flow.

And we will still have selective ticketing of cars and motor cycles.

The Town Hall needs a clear out in departments and people employed that know what they are doing instead of thinking they know what they are doing. Big difference.

Well, what is there left to say? Seamer Road is now one big bad joke. The two sets of works are needed, but just how slow can the work proceed? The Queen Margarets Junction should be a round-the-clock job, which could be finished very quickly. At least they have avoided more temporary traffic lights.
But, the Park and Ride!! During the last 3 weeks has any work actually been done? Many cars parked during the day, but nothing seems to change. Half the light columns still laying on the ground, weeks after the rest went up. Loads of paving slabs on the tarmac and not going anywhere. Loads of cones on the main road seemingly doing nothing. No sign of any traffic lights yet, maybe someone ordered too few for the whole town. The whole project seems to have stopped!
Then between the two sites, the excuse of the B&Q lights! Great during the day, but surely they could work of some sensors at night. Lights go to red, I look left, nothing, I look right, nothing, I just sit and wait! How pointless! Come on SBC, the lights must work, and have common sense in evenings and night time. If it all fails I assume we will read here the first details of the resignations from the town hall!

Oh and I forgot to mention one thing. Dear SBC, when leaving the Currys/MKM car park and wishing to go to Falsgrave Road, What is the official route to be taken? Answers on a post card! I bet the sat-navs will love this one.

How arrogant of Mr Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Borough Council's technical services manager, with his comments about the Scarborough road works. Does he think us stupid? He is missing the point that it is the total amount and type of road works in the area in such a relatively short space of time which is the issue. This leads one to believe that the so called specialists such as him who are employed by the councils (and I include North Yorkshire in this) do not have a clue about how to manage such relatively large scale works in the area. We have had too many road works on too many main roads into the town over too short a period and that is a fact which has gone towards damaging the economic viability of Scarborough as a regional shopping centre. People are just going elsewhere. Just another example of how the councils are failing to provide good services to the community.
