AS THE summer temperatures rise motorists are becoming increasingly frustrated at roadworks in and around Scarborough.
One driver, who would not give his name, contacted the Evening News to say he had been caught up in long delays every day last week in Seamer Road – one of the busiest commuter routes into the town.
And motorists said they had a sense of deja vu as work began again at the traffic lights at the junction between Dean Road and Castle Road.
But Scarborough Council has defended the essential work which is part of an on-going programme.
Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Council's technical services manager, said: "On the Seamer Road corridor there are two locations where work is ongoing.
"The junction works at Queen Margaret's Road will be completed by September.
"The works at the new park and ride site are undertaken by North Yorkshire County Council and the latest date for completion that we were given was mid July.
"As this has now passed we await further advice from the county council's contractor."
Mr Bedford said the Dean Road junction had not been dug up again. "The work was not completed previously, and an excavation was left open until such time as the underground cables could be reconnected to the new signals controller," he said. "This work is now being completed."
The council has kept motorists informed with regular bulletins in the Evening News detailing where the roadworks would be as work continues on Scarborough's Integrated Transport Scheme.
Significant roadworks have been taking place this year to ensure bus priority measures are put in place at key points when the park and ride schemes start in the autumn.
Bus lanes are planned as part of the scheme and one will cover the A165 Filey Road scheme from a new roundabout near Wheatcroft and St Martin's Schools playing fields and run towards the junction with Queen Margaret's Road.
