FED UP David Griffiths is being driven up the wall by phone calls for a Scarborough bank after it changed its telephone number.
The 43-year-old started getting calls for the Yorkshire Bank when the Scarbor-ough branch changed its number to one with an 0845 code. The six digits following the code are exactly the same as Mr Griffiths' home number.

He says customers are assuming they can get through to the branch in Scarborough direct, if they replace the 0845 number, with the Scarborough area code – 01723.

He said: "It started five months ago. They've had an 0845 number for the past three years but now they are getting rid of the branch numbers."

Mr Griffiths, who lives in Setterington Road, said he was aware of the bank having the same number as him but did not expect to get many calls.

He said: "I've had more Yorkshire Bank calls than anything else.

"My number is also similar to estate agents and a couple of taxi companies. It's quite annoying if you are in the middle of something.

"The phone calls are mainly between 9am and about 3pm. I have had a response from the bank and they are going to try and do something about their statements."

He added the confusion may have arisen because bank statements and other literature still had a fax number with a Scarborough code and people just assumed they could ring the call centre number with the Scarborough code instead of the 0845 code.

He said: "I've suggested they make it clear in the branch.

"I haven't had the taxi calls for a while. They are more during Friday and Saturday nights. I think after a while they will stop once it's publicised and everyone gets to know the number."

Mr Griffiths added that he had spoken to a marketing analyst from the head office at Yorkshire Bank and he had assured him he was looking into ways of making the correct number more prominent.

The Evening News approached the company for a comment but, at the time of going to press, had not received a reply.

Do what most of the banks and big businesses do, play the caller a tape of Greensleeves for an hour or so.

The use of 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers is a disgrace. They are just an excuse to hide the location of the line. and sometimes, especially with 087 numbers, make lots of dosh. You may even be talking to India! Some time ago '03' numbers were brought in to try and sort this out, and I think it's high time that Oftel banned the '08' numbers altogether and force companies to use '03' numbers. Unfortunately, maybe in this case, people would still try and be clever and put on the '01723' prefix. Maybe the best answer would be for all banks, and others, to simply give their true branch number, like one bank does on recent tv adverts. Why all the secrecy? Ooops, I forgot, It's to make more money out of us.

You could have a lot of fun with this, although it may make people want to change banks after.
If i were this bloke i would tell the bank i am going to be rude to all of your customers until you get it sorted!

Companies using non-geographic numbers are ripping off their customers, as they get a cut of the customers' phone bills if they can con them into ringing 08 or 09 numbers.

The first thing to try is to go to the brilliant website saynoto0870.com, which will often have an alternative geographic number.

...one of your correspondents suggests that 03... numbers are fairer.

In fact, these are still con tricks, as the firm you call gets a cut.

Most people nowadays have call plans that provide included calls to normal numbers. Any firm that is not trying to rip off its customers should provide such a number.

#3 I think you have the best idea, being rude to YB's customers should make them sit up and think.

As a YB customer myself I find the 0845 number a total pain. When I finally get through I talk to some halfwit who asks me what I want then says he'll put me through to my branch. Then I wait another 10 mins before they answer the phone. Why can't I just ring the branch?

I Bank with Yorkshire Bank. It may be of interest to YB customers to know that you can INSIST that you are put through to your local branch and do not have to deal with the call centre if you do not wish to - but you still have to do it through the 0845 call centre number. My Bank manager informs me that, if you request that course of action, the call centre has to put you through, so if they tell you they cannot, demand to speak to the supervisor.
