Published Date: 10 July 2008
A SENIOR councillor has put the brakes on a controversial traffic shake-up which would have seen buses making a U-turn in the middle of Westborough.
Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Council's cabinet member for transport, said: "I was not comfortable with the proposals at all." Now he has called on EYMS, the company behind Scarborough and District Buses, to provide more information or come up with a better plan.

The shake-up is due to the current bus stops in Somerset Terrace, at the back of the Brunswick Centre, falling foul of the Disability Discrimination Act because of the slope in the road.

They will be taken out of service by the end of the year – affecting around 40 buses a day on the 118, 119, 120, 121 and 122 services from Hull, Primrose Valley and Filey although some do not run on certain days.

Officials came up with the temporary suggestion that buses coming from the Filey direction should continue along Valley Bridge Road and turn into Westborough to the bus stops outside the station – before doing a U-turn on the busy road to make the return journey.

They concede that the idea could conflict with the long-termaspirations of the Urban Renaissance programme which aims to "redevelop the area around the railway station to create a more attractive, pedestrian-friendly environment."

A report from John Hannah of the technical services department, says changes at the Westborough bus stops would require "significant" civil engineering work which could limit the station area redevelopment.

Instead temporary measures could be taken for certain services to be relocated to the station forecourt frontage while a redevelopment scheme was finalised.

Some extra road markings would be required on Westborough to ensure the buses were not obstructed and the phasing of the nearby traffic signals would offer a "window" where buses should be able to make the u-turn without conflicting with other traffic.

The changes would also involve creating a new bus stop at the existing parking and taxi bay on Westborough to the west of the forecourt for the Coastliner services.

Cllr Backhouse said: "I have deferred a decision as I have reservations about whether it will work and so I want more information about timetables and services, how it would work in practice and to consider alternative methods of the return journey."

Maybe if they installed a roundabout at the Odeon?

Or has that one been suggested before....

PS if they want to make it pedestrian friendly, may I suggest digging a subway from the station forecourt to come out opposite the Odeon at the top of Westboro?

OK I'm showing my age now.

Or perhaps they could open a bus station somewhere. Perhaps at the top end of Somerset Terrace near the junction with Valley Bridge.

Subways could mean muggings in the medium and longer term. Maybe its time just to say No on the disability aspect due to Health and Safety Concerns.......now theres a conflict for you.

The Roundabout would be the logical solution, but it seems that there is no logic when it comes to traffic in Scarborough, and maybe the council wouldn't like to be seen to do a U-Turn...

Is todays date April 1st by any chance!!!!!! Oh no silly me it is our esteemed planners coming up yet with another cracker. May I also suggest that they errect barriers with signs stating "Scarborough Closed" on all roads leading into our town as they seem to be actively discouraging people to drive around the town including us long suffering locals.
P.S. Can't wait to see what revised plan they come up with!
