BOSSES of a Scarborough supermarket chain have denied they are selling up, despite unloading one shop to a High Street giant.
Proudfoot now have just three outlets after agreeing a deal with Tesco for the group's Barton in Humber store.

Ian Proudfoot, joint managing director, today reassured customers there were no plans to sell the Scarborough stores but made no promises for the future.

He said: "This is not the start of us selling off the stores – I can honestly say that. You can never tell what is in the future though, and it depends on what happens.

"It is very rare for an independent company to run a supermarket nowadays but our stores in Scarborough are doing great."

The sale of the Barton in Humber store came only a year after the company was forced to sell its Withernsea store to Aldi, after struggling to compete with Tesco which had opened a new store in the town.

Mr Proudfoot said: "We enjoyed every moment at the Barton store but Tesco negotiated very well. We were delighted that they decided to keep on all existing members of staff and we wish them every success.

"The Proudfoot group is doing very well and we have got some serious plans for each of our existing stores, which we hope to put into motion within the next year to 18 months."

The company's remaining outlets are in Scalby Road, at Eastfield, and the company's oldest store at Seamer.

You have to think that there is the possibility of off loading the remainder over a period of time. The comments as reported by Ian Proudfoot leaves the door wide open to sell up. They have now got all their stores within Scarborough and nothing to worry about outside of the area.

I have shopped at 'Proudies' at Newby for a long long time but now only use as and when as I find them quite expensive on a lot of items compared to the other Supermarkets.

A family concern in this day and age will find the going tough against the 'big boys'. Maybe time to sell up and enjoy life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well this is the same company that in 2005 said Tesco's was to big and brought a complaint to OFT and then now now sell a store to Tesco. I smell a rat here

"Mr Proudfoot brought a complaint to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) against Tesco, alleging "predatory pricing" by the firm in the small North Yorkshire town of Withernsea. "

With Proudfoot being local and having there head office and warehouse at Eastfield, Scarborough, having such a small amount of shops surely this will now result in job cuts particularly at there HQ and warehouse

Is this the same Proudfoots who told us their sales were up 11% last week? Even though they are the most expensive shop in town?

Sad in many ways to see what is clearly the beginning of the end for a local retailer - we all know what Tesco's game is and where it will end - but I'm afraid Proudfoots have not been too proud to exploit the advantages of their locations in the past (ie the high prices) so no reason why they won't take the 30 pieces of silver Tesco are now offering them.

Just 3 days ago He said

http://www.scarborougheveningnews.co.uk/news/Stores-battle-for-your-money.4259771.jp

"Ian Proudfoot, joint managing director of Proudfoot, said: "By keeping competition and good service we will hold our own in the price war and will continue to compete and grow."

"And it is working. In the last week I can confidently say that our four branches in Scarborough between them are a magnificent 11.3 per cent up on last year's sales, and that is typical of us at the moment at Proudfoot.""
