'TOP PRIORITY FOR WATER PARK' A NEW POOL DEVELOPMENT FOR SCARBOROUGH?

A NEW water park and pool could be built on the former Atlantis water park after all.
Benchmark Leisure, the firm behind the £150 million The Sands development, has confirmed that after months of speculation the prominent location is again actively under consideration.

There have been long-standing calls for an all-weather, up-to-date water park as a major attraction for residents and visitors.

David Rhodes, the firm's managing director, said: "There is a strong desire to build this attraction on the Atlantis site." This has been confirmed by Pauline Elliott, the council's head of regeneration and planning, who said: "An application will shortly be coming before the planning committee for leisure use on the site of The Sands."

Mr Rhodes added: "We are working with Scarborough Council and architects at the moment. There would be a variety of features which would provide a fantastic tourist attraction.

"The intention is to build a big facility which would be open all year round. It is still early days but hopefully we can start work soon."

Mr Rhodes described the collapse of the LEGOLAND Discovery deal, which had been earmarked for the site, as "a huge disappointment" but believed the water park would be bigger and better than the centre.

"But we have moved on and the water park is a brilliant replacement. It will have that wow factor which will attract thousands of people to Scarborough."

Cllr Tom Fox, leader of the council, said: "Nothing is definite yet but the possibility is being explored. We are also looking at bringing the building of the pool forward so it's not the last thing built. Things will be happening pretty soon but with discussions and planning applications it could be six months before we have a concrete plan.

"Obviously the design and building of the pool will take some time." When The Sands development started more than two years ago there were indications that a replacement for the existing nearby indoor pool would form part of the Atlantis site redevelopment. But other ideas included a site at the back of the old Marvels attraction and the Burniston Road car park.

Mr Rhodes has confirmed they hope to have the proposed 5,500 seat open-air theatre ready by next summer. He said: "Restoring the theatre has been something we wanted to do.

"If it gets the go ahead, we aim to start work later this year. We would restore the seating and there are plans to include a huge digital screen on the stage. It would be fantastic for Scarborough. Mr Rhodes said he was already in talks with an operator who was lining up top acts and shows for the venue.

He added: "It will attract some top events and shows but there would be smaller events as well. It would be a great asset for the town."

How many millions is this going to cost the Scarborough council tax payers.

What is to be done with the existing pool site, I bet you could get hundreds of private flats on there.

All this coming from a company who only weeks ago was pleading poverty and went to SBC with the begging bowl.

Once again I believe they are up to something underhanded and it will cost us all dearly.

Well, at last some sense. The former atlantis site is the focal point of the whole project, as it is what you see as you drive down from town. However, is the site big enough ? We need a world-class, as good as if not better than any indoor pool world in the country, and proper swimming facilities to replace the indoor pool. Along with ancillary facilities, i.e. bars, restaurants etc., I cant see the area being big enough, unless it climbs up the hill and over the top too.

You have called this one exactly right CC.

How come Benchmark have suddenly become rich again? Or maybe their brilliant ideas don't involve spending their own money?

And how come no other firm gets the chance to bid for these lucrative contracts? What happened to competitive tendering?

The connection between this shadowy company and SBC needs to be explored further.

Fantastic news. Surely this is what we all want.We should all get behind the plans and do all we can to promote Scarborough as THE seaside town to visit,

We are going round in circles! In July 2006, Benchmark submitted an application 05/01352/RM for a new "Waterpark including lane swimming facility" etc for the Atlantis site. Of course it never made it as far as Committee, but could there be any significance in the fact that that was presented at the same time as the application for the 100 reidential apartments was up for consideration - and THE COUNCIL agreed that the apartments application was only legitimate if it enabled cross funding of an otherwise uneconomic leisure facility. Stand alone Private apartments in that position were contrary to the Local Plan.
Post 3 hits the nail squarely on the head as far as Benchmark spending is concerned. I was advised some time ago by the Town Hall that Benchmark is the facilitator of the Sands project rather than a big finacial investor in Scarborough. I share the concerns about the relationship between Developer and Council and so have already raised that issue with both the Ombudsman and Audit Commission in the hope that they will be able to dig below the surface and actually view the commercially sensitive information that is so often quoted if difficult questions are asked about public funds being used to prop up Benchmark and the way public land being handed over to Benchmark without it being offered to other potential developers. I fear all is not well.

Benchmark and the Council make the Mafia look like a open organisation.

Only 2 weeks ago Benchmark had to shelve a hotel project but now all of a sudden its all hell and no notion for a 'Water Park'.

A Water Park (call it what you will) should have been a priority from day one. It should if it ever sees the light of day be capable of holding races and diving to ASA standards and not just a giant fun pool. That being we are to lose the Indoor Pool.

But housing and flats took precedence simply because they were profit for Benchmark and whoever else is eating from the same trough.

As with comments from No's 1 & 3 above, the smell of slightly rotting fish is starting to surface. It begs the question of just what deals have been done behind closed doors with Benchmark and Council. Because I do not believe for one moment it is for the benefit of the electorate and public in general.

Maybe Cllr. Popple will come up from his office in the Town Hall bunker and say a few words with this being on his doorstep and not the other side of Scarborough !!!!.

With a bit of luck this latest 'idea' will come to something & benchmark & the company nominated to run said water park will make ir affordable for locals & tourists alike. Our kids need something like this as the nearest is in Brid which is an expensive bus ride away.

As an outsider now living away from home town I welcome the idea.
It will cost the taxpayer somewhere along the line but do you want Scarboro to die completely?
Such places as Peasholme park the old pool St Nicholas cliffs all the beautiful places that made visitors come to Scarboro, the long overdue clean up are all making the place a lot better to visit and of course to live in.
Most towns are having to replace such facilities and repair work that has been long overdue. Why because it was all left to rot!
Stop whinging and whining and get behind anything that will put YOUR town back on the map.
