THE success of a new musical at the Spa Theatre in March has inspired its writers to restage it in Whitby.
Barnaby Rudge, with lyrics by Mike Lyons – adapting Dickens' novel – and music by Bill Scott, was a big hit with its audiences.

In a letter to the Evening News, Terry Ladlow of Hunmanby said it was "splendid, vibrant and intoxicating". He went on: "I haven't seen anything as courageous, ambitious and satisfying in the last 20 years in Scarborough.

"The magnitude and complexity of the presentation gave us so much to admire, to savour, to enjoy, to contemplate."

The plot is based on the "no-popery" or Gordon riots of 1780 seen through the eyes of the good-hearted but dopey title character.

Most but not all of the cast are available for the new production, scheduled for Whitby Pavilion from October 1-3.

Bill says: "Two female roles and possibly two male roles will be available for actors/ singers aged 17-30.

"Auditions for these leading roles, and anyone who would like to be involved in the chorus or future projects, are to be held in the hall at Graham School on Sunday June 21, at 2pm."

If you are interested, either ring Bill on (01723) 364153 or just turn up, with some music to perform – either backing tracks or piano accompaniment.

Bill says: "It will be great to assemble our talented cast of actors, stage crew and musicians once more.

"I hope we will also be able to draw in some new faces.

"We hope to involve new actors, musicians and stage crew from Whitby and Scarborough in the production in order to continue the community theme we developed during the production of Barnaby Rudge."
