TRUST TO RUN NEW SCARBORO' club

THE Seadog Supporters' Trust are set to take charge of a new Scarborough club, playing in the Northern Counties East League.

Scarborough Athletic will be part of a 17-team division one next season, with their home games being played at Bridlington Town’s Queensgate ground.

NCEL secretary Barry Wood confirmed last night that the club would be in the league “so long as certain criteria are met” during talks with Trust officials over the next couple of days.

“We want to meet those running the club, find out who might be the manager, check out the Bridlington ground and make sure the new club is affiliated to the FA - if we are satisfied then Scarborough Athletic will be in our league this coming season,” said Wood.

Trust chairman Simon Cope said: “I’m confident we will meet all the NCEL requirements - then a Scarborough team will be playing in the new season, which is fantastic.”

Wood said that although there had been a second inquiry to join the NCEL from Ian Scobbie, chairman of the former Boro club on behalf of AFC Scarborough, there had been no official application to follow that up.

“The only written application and correct paperwork came from the Trust,” explained Wood.

He said that while Scarborough Athletic will be playing home games at Bridlington, he would be urging those running the club to have plans about a return to Scarborough.

“Ideally a Scarborough team should be playing in Scarborough.” said Wood.

The formation of the new set-up follows last week’s winding-up order on Boro, with the 2.5m debt-ridden club going out of business after 128 years.
