town title hopes 'need a miracle'

SCARBOROUGH Town boss Mitch Cook says it will take a miracle for his side to be still in with a shout of Wearside League glory at the end of the season.

Town face a run of 18 league and cup games before the campaign comes to a close on May 15, with the first of their fixtures the trip to Guisborough Town tonight (7.30pm ko).

Should Town remain in the race for title honours, then they face the toughest possible finish to the season - a home game against current leaders Ryhope on the penultimate Saturday of the season, and then a 320-mile round trip to Cleator Moor to wrap things up.

Boss Cook said: “We knew to expect this but that doesn’t take away thet fact that it is going to be a huge challenge to a small squad of young lads.

“This is what you get though when you are successful and you keep winning games. There is always going to be a backlog of fixtures.

“The fact that we have not been able to play home games in midweek and the recent poor weather has not helped our cause.

“It will be a miracle if we can get through all these fixtures and still have a chance, but all we are doing is focussing on the next game in hand and taking things from there.

“The game against Ryhope is possibly being billed as the title-decider, and the long trip to Cleator Moor could be one that we may enjoy with the pressure off, but again we are not looking that far ahead.”

Town will welcome attacker Robbie Hawkes back into the squad for tonight’s trip after he burst back onto the Saturday League scene at the weekend, firing one of the goals in Sherburn’s 2-1 win against Scalby.

Nathan Cook will once again be absent though, as he serves the second match of his three-game ban.
