Tony Hackworth's play-off target for Whitby Town

WHITBY Town skipper Tony Hackworth is hoping that he can fire his side into a late challenge for a play-off place.

Former Leeds United and Boro forward Hackworth has been in fine form so far this season, netting 13 goals in all competitions after moving up front from central midfield to help end the club's goalscoring problems earlier this season.

Hackworth said: "I'm doing alright at the moment. I started the season in central midfield but we were struggling a bit for strikers so the gaffer moved me up front and it's going well.

"It wasn't the best of games against Burscough even though we won, and they're not having the best of times at the moment but the lads are growing in confidence and hopefully we can take that into Saturday's game."

Hackworth is doubtful for tomorrow's clash with Ashton United at the Turnbull Ground after missing Wednesday night's 2-0 defeat against North Ferriby United due to a groin injury.

But he is confident that experienced Town boss Harry Dunn will have something up his sleeve should he be out of action.

"I'm struggling for tomorrow to be honest. I've got a bit of a groin problem at the moment and I shouldn't have played against Burscough but I can't watch games and the manager knows that, I have to play.

"Me, Ged Dalton and Andy Campbell are all injured so I don't know what Harry will do for strikers but he has been about a while and I am sure he will be able to sort something out in time for Saturday."

Hackworth is also confident that Town can make a late assault for a play-off place if they can take advantage of their games in hand and gather some momentum.

He added: "I don't see why we can't challenge up there. We have some tough games coming up against Boston and Bradford PA but we also have to play Durham twice and Frickley so if we can win those games and pick up points against the teams above us we will have a chance.

"Saturday is a big game for us and we want to increase the gap between ourselves and Ashton so a win is really important."
