Swimmers top the list - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
THE top young stars in the Scarborough area lined up to collect their prizes at last night's Scarborough and District Sports Council Awards.
Two swimming aces claimed the top spots in the under-18s male award, Gareth Mills edging out clubmate Ross Glegg.
Scarborough Sixth Form College student Gareth has shone on the county and national scene over the past 12 months, earning fifth place in the national 200m butterfly - the highest-ever finish by a Scarborough swimmer.
The Scarborough Swimming Club ace has also been selected for the Scottish Youth squad, won a bronze medal in the English Schools final, qualified for the Commonwealth and British trials and is now ranked number one in Scotland in the 200m butterfly and number five in Great Britain.
Table tennis ace Rebecca George won the girls under-18s award for the second year running, edging out Louisa Pratt of Scarborough Indoor Bowls Club.
Rebecca played for England in a schools international, won the British College Championship and claimed third place in the English Schools finals as well as winning numerous county and district events.
Another swimming star to make it onto the roll of honour last night was Rebecca Whaling, of Scarborough SC, who bagged top spot in the under-16s girls section.
Rebecca became the youngest-ever competitor to qualify and swim in five events at the national championships, capping a fine year which has seen her collect medals at the North-east Championships, Yorkshire Championships, Yorkshire Age Group Championships and ESSA regional championship.
Runner-up in this category was table tennis star Alex Lee.
Whitby RUFC under-15s skipper Alex Beaumont scooped the under-16s boys award after a cracking season for the teen ace.
Alex's Whitby team won the Yorkshire Plate last season, and he is now captain of the under-16s team. He also plays for Fyling Hall 1st XV and played for Yorkshire under-15s in the 2008-09 season in all but one game.
He pipped martial arts ace Mathew Hawkridge, of the Troid Ryu club, to the title.
Scarborough Gymnastics Academy star Amber Wilson won the girls under-14s award after a year packed full of top achievements.
Amber, 12, is a member of the Yorkshire squad and was the first Scarborough gymnast to compete on their behalf at national level, where she finished in sixth place out of 90 competitors aged 16 and under.

She was given the nod in this category ahead of kickboxer Taylor Shaw, of the Troid Ryu club.
Scalby School’s cricket ace Jack Holt won the boys under-14s trophy.
Snainton youngster Jack is a product of the highly successful Scarborough Cricket Development Group, and he has earned a spot in the Yorkshire A and B teams at under-14 level, as well as playing for North Yorkshire under-14s.
Jack won the award ahead of martial arts star Will Anderson, of Troid Ryu.
Megan Coates won the primary girl under-11s award for her achievements as a gymnast.
The 10-year-old, who is a member of the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club, came seventh in the national championship also gained a second overall on beam, rance and conditioning. She is hard-working and dedicated, travelling to Merseyside four times a week to train.
She earned the award ahead of tennis star Hottie Hodgson, of Fyling Hall School.
Morgan Grunwell, of the Troid Ryu Karate Freestyle club, scooped the boys under-11s award.
The Lindhead School pupil is a true all-round athlete, taking part in kick-boxing with Troid Ryu, and winning gold, silver and bronze medals at the Boston Championships, as well as representing his school at rugby, cricket, swimming, rounders and gymnastics.
He pipped tennis ace John Ellison to the title.
