Strongwood shock Traf with cup win

LUKE Purvis helped himself to a brace when Strongwood shocked Trafalgar 4-3 in the Senior Cup.

Traf were looking good at half-time as they led 2-0 with both goals coming from Liam Salt.

Strongwood started their comeback in the second half with Purvis firing in two on the trot.

Strongwood then led for the first time when central defender Stewart Hollingsworth headed in from a corner.

Salt then completed his hat-trick to level matters once again.

But with 10 minutes left midfielder Kris Tate blasted in from 25 yards out and that was enough to win it for Strongwood.

Strongwood boss Dave Scott said: “It was a tremendous result for the lads and Tate’s goal was worthy of winning any football match.

“We were two goals behind at the break so showed great spirit to come back and win the game.”

Travis Wood and Dean Andrews both collected trebles as Angel defeated Castle Tavern 11-2 in the semi-finals of the Kenward Cup.

Striker Paul Provins chipped in with a brace for Angel while Phil Meads, Neil Thomas and Ben Sheader also added their names to the scoresheet.

Neil Thomas scored the goal of the game an absolute belter from 30 yards.

Tom Scales scored both consolation efforts for Tavern but they were never really in a match in which the home side were 6-0 at the interval.

Goalkeeper Steve McAusland and defender Gary Thomas both impressed for Angel while Nick Thorpe missed a penalty for the victors.

Angel boss Jamie Towse said: “It was an excellent performance from the lads and it was easily some of the best football we have played.

“Credit to the team for their work-rate throughout and hopefully we can go on to win the competition now.”
