Second championship is Ladies' aim
Lumley Ladies 1
Boro Ladies 4
AFTER winning the North Riding League at a canter last season, Scarborough Ladies first team took another step closer to the top of the North East Regional Women’s League last weekend.
In second place with games in hand over leaders Durham City Ladies, Boro travelled to Chester-le-Street Town AFC’s Moor Park ground to face Lumley Ladies, and took the points with a convincing performance.
Player-of-the-match was left-winger Natalie Wilford, who notched a hat-trick in the 4-1 win.
It was from Wilford’s early free-kick that Boro almost took the lead – her effort crashing against the bar, before Natalie Davies was ruled offside as she tapped in Bronagh Malone’s follow-up.
Wilford did open the scoring just two minutes later, firing home after a neat one-two with Katie Welham.
The pair also combined for the second goal.
This time Welham was fouled outside the area by the home keeper, and Wilford struck a well-placed free-kick into the net.
Lumley’s first effort came half-an-hour into the match, but the shot was screwed across goal and didn’t test Boro keeper Emily Stevenson.
The first exchanges of the second half saw little in the way of clear-cut chances, and it wasn’t until 65 minutes that Boro stretched their lead.
Wilford completed her hat-trick from the edge of the area, after a flowing move involving the right-sided duo of Laura Breckon and Laura Errington.
The visitors’ defence continued to hold tight, with Malone and Nic Whelan not allowing anything to get past them, and it was a fellow defender – left-back Alex Bell – who provided the fourth goal.
Her cross into the box was perfectly taken down on the chest by Errington, who half-volleyed home to secure the win.
One blot on the copybook was a late consolation for the home team, and Bell also had to be alert to clear from the line in the final minute.
But by then the three points were secure, and Boro travelled home happy with their afternoon’s work.
With third-place Birtley Town, who Boro travel to face this weekend, losing against the league leaders, it now looks to be a two-horse race to the title between Boro and Durham.
Boro are just three points behind with a game in hand.
Team: Stevenson, Breckon, Bell, Whelan (Dickinson), Malone, Errington, Dennis, Middlemas, Wilford, Welham, Davies (Spivey)
