Seaside memories of ex-England ace
WHEN Scarborough FC were enjoying their heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, a potential sporting great was witnessing their rise.
Martin Corry was a regular at the Athletic Ground during that time, before his Saturday afternoons were taken up by Six Nations battles and top class rugby union.
The newly retired former England and Barbarians skipper took in all the highlights during his youthful years, and he still takes the time to pay the odd visit to his favourite holiday venue.
He said: "I used to come up to Scarborough a great deal during my younger years to stay with my grandad.
"When he died we kept the flat on and we still spend a lot of time up here in Scarborough.
"It is a great place and my kids love the beach.
"I have a lot of fond memories of the town and of the games I saw down at the Athletic Ground.
"Every time I came to Scarborough I used to go and watch a game. Then when Scarborough played down south against teams from round the London area - where I used to live - we would go and watch them there as well.
"One of the highlights was the Littlewoods Cup win against Chelsea, as well as the first game in the football league against Wolves.
"Neil Warnock was a great manager during those times and I really enjoyed my trips to the Athletic Ground, my holidays always had to coincide with the football season.
"It is really sad to drive past the Athletic Ground and see it as it is now.
"Unfortunately the demands of being a pro club can sometimes be too much.
"My interest has wained a bit in recent years after the old club folded.
"I haven't been to see Scarborough Athletic as yet. I'm not sure that my family would be too happy if I headed off down the coast to Bridlington while I was on holiday with them.
"You never know though, I might get down there one day."
Much of Corry's time is now spent in his new role as the ambassador of Premiership side Leicester Tigers, as he plies his trade off the field these days rather than on it.
He added: "Leicester is a great club and it is a great role for me, one that I really enjoy.
"It involves all sorts of things, which keeps me in and around the game after my retirement.
"My playing days are firmly over now, due mainly to old age and injury.
"I did play one game recently, but it took me a good while to recover from it, so it isn't worth it anymore.
"There will be no chance of me making any appearances for Scarborough Rugby Club when I return to the town again."
