Schofield brothers grab golden glory
A RECORD total of 55 athletes from Scarborough and District represented the Borough at the North Yorkshire Schools cross-country championships, with Schofield brothers Josh and Danny leading the way in Skipton.
There was plenty of team and individual success for the area's runners, with Josh and Danny's gold medals the highlights.
The championships were also used as a selection match for the prestigious English Schools finals and for a county match with Durham which, while mainly for year sevens who are ineligible to compete in the English finals, is also a final eliminator for those who came close to automatic selection by finishing in the top six.
After the Skipton races, five Scarborough and District boys and five girls were selected for the English Schools finals, while five boys and nine girls were awarded a county vest for the match with Durham.
The first of two gold medal performances for Scarborough and District came in the inter-boys race, when Josh Schofield of Scalby School and Scarborough AC improved on his third place last year for a decisive victory.
The 2009 Yorkshire and Northern club champion finished ahead of Marc Scott and Fergus Roberts of Harrogate Craven Schools, who are both top-class club runners and compete for Richmond and Zetland Harriers.
Both have won league races in the current season, while Roberts is a former English Club champion and the runner-up at last year's English Schools championships.
Scarborough's Jack Robertson had an outstanding race to finish up in fifth and split York Schools' Jack Dereham and Faisal Ismail of Harrogate Schools, who is a top club runner in the West Yorkshire League for Keighley and Craven AC.
Jack will now join Josh at the English Schools finals at Manchester in March.
Ed Robinson of Ampleforth College finished in 10th and was therefore selected to represent the county in a match against Durham which will decide the final selection for the English Schools final.
Ed Hampshire, also of Ampleforth, was the fifth scorer for Scarborough, and Adam Sample of Scalby School, completed the team when finishing in 18th.
The sqyad were a close second behind Hambleton Schools.
The second gold medal for Scarborough and District was won by Josh's brother, Danny Schofield of Scarborough Sixth Form College and Scarborough AC, who also had a decisive win in the senior boys race to retain the title he won last year and to march through into the English Schools final.
Danny finished well clear of a tenacious Billy Pinder of Harrogate Craven Schools, who is also a top runner for Skipton Athletic Club in the West Yorkshire league.
Scarborough Schools' only other senior competitor was Alex Hornsby of Scarborough Sixth Form College and Scarborough AC who finished up in 19th.
Milan Misak of Fyling Hall School, who was not available at Skipton, has been selected to run in the county match at Durham.
