Phoenix grab victory at Hunmanby
PHOENIX under-12s won their age-group at the annual Hunmanby football tournament.
The Phoenix aces played four group games, in their first they beat hosts Hunmanby 2-0 thanks to goals from Benny Davis and Jack White.
Phoenix then held Cayton to a goalless draw, followed by a 3-0 success against Scholes Park, with White, Thomas Sutherland and Regan Hewitt all on target.
In their final game Phoenix saw off Bridlington 3-1, with White, Davis and Liam Mancrief scoring to steer their side into the semis.
Phoenix's semi with Ayton was goal less after normal time.
Dramatic events in extra-time saw a disallowed goal for Ayton, swiftly followed by a spot-kick awarded to Phoenix for a foul on Davis, with Mancrief scoring the penalty to put Phoenix through to the final.
In the final Phoenix came up against Cayton again. It was a close-fought battle and was again goalless after normal time.
Phoenix went 1-0 up in the first half of extra-time and held the lead until nearly the last kick of the game when a well-worked goal by Cayton brought a draw and needed the game to be settled on penalties.
The teams were still level after the three mandatory penalties taking the shoot-out into sudden death.
The sixth penalty was put away by Ellis Howley and with Cayton then missing their spot-kick this handed Phoenix the victory.
