THE area’s top young table tennis stars showed off their skills at the ESTTA Individual Tournament at Graham School.

The first winner was Gladstone Road’s Jemima Whyte, who saw off her schoolmate Emily Underwood 11-4, 11-4 in the final of the under-11s girls event.

Newby & Scalby’s James Ledner also won in straight sets against Jake Watson, Northstead, triumphing by an 11-7, 11-9 scoreline.

The most competitive section was the under-13s boys, with Scalby’s Ryan Megginson winning by three sets to two in a thriller.

Megginson took the opening two sets 11-8, 11-7, but St John Fishers’ George Gibson battled back to claim the next two 11-9, 11-7, setting up a decider which the Scalby star won 11-8.

Sixteen players took part in this category so it was an action-packed section.

Oriana Towart-Wakefield (Graham School) won the under-13s girls title.

Ten teenagers took part in the boys under-16s section, with Scalby’s Matthew Whilde battling back from two sets down to claim victory in a five-set classic against Graham’s Michael Fardoe, 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7, 13-11.

In another five-set thriller, Rhianna Wood beat fellow Graham School pupil Grace Douthwaite 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6 to secure the girls under-16s crown.

Scarborough Sixth Form College scooped a double in the under-19s section, with Jack Bridgeman wining the boys title and Katie Lee the girls.
