North stars see off rivals Borough

THE meeting of second-placed team North Cliff 1 and third-placed Borough 1 in the Over-60s League division one, on Wednesday, was a crunch clash.

This was regarded by the pundits as the match to determine whether Cliff would retain the championship for the 18th consecutive season, though leaders Dukes Park 1 might have different ideas.

Cliff certainly showed their determination to be top dogs once again – and their class in depth – when they beat Borough 14-0 on a rapid- running green.

Pat Germaine and Dave Moment 28-6 had the win of the day, closely followed by John Cooper and Sonnie Howard 22-10.

In their previous match Borough 1 had enjoyed a 12-2 success at home to Bridlington Bay 1 when Terry Summersgill and Jack Binns won 26-12 and Rita and Tony Bland 25-15.

Bay’s points came from two drawn games, 15-15 by Les Stockell and John Winstanley and 19-19 by Jackie and Tom Learmont.

In division two Borough 3 beat Eastfield 2 (who again had to concede a walkover due to player shortage) 11-4.

Joyce Evans and George Dickson 22-13 and Eileen and Jim Brownridge 17-14 earned Eastfield’s points while B Beattie and Graham Sykes 21-14 had Borough’s big win.

Evening Singles League division one action saw North Cliff 1 drop just four points when recording a 164-109 success at home to Dukes Park 1.

Derrick Swift 21-4 and John Cooper 21-9 won to single figures for Cliff while Billy Holdsworth 21-17 was Park’s lone winner.

Borough 2 and Dukes Park 4 fought out a close encounter at Manor Road with Park taking the honours 139-135. Best wins were by Chris Bielby 21-3 for Park and Penny Gosling 21-8 for Borough.

Hunmanby 2 took the honours 159-110 in a division two clash with Borough 4 at Manor Road, thanks to a 21-7 return by Shirley Lightfoot. Best for Borough was Di Purdy 21-13.

A rare draw, 69-69, was achieved in the Evening Doubles League when Westgate 2 were at home to Borough 2. Rita Bland and Bob Davies 21-8, for Borough, and Joyce and Trevor Smith 21-7, for Hunmanby, were the big margin winners.

Dukes Park 1 scored a maximum 84-53 success away to North Cliff, with the in-form Ron Marshall and Dennis O’Neill 21-11 having the best return.
