Mills siblings hit top form for Yorkshire
On the same day as she received a call up by the England team manager for her international debut at fell racing next month, 15-year-old Becky Mills along with her brother, 16-year-old Darren Mills, represented Yorkshire at the Northern Athletics Inter Counties Championships at the Gateshead International Stadium.
Becky, who was the women's under-17 silver medalist at 800 and 1500 metres at this year's Yorkshire Championships, was selected for the 3,000 metres, in which she achieved a lifetime best for the event earlier in the season.
Racing in a windswept stadium, Becky ran to within a second of her best time of 11.01, when finishing as runner up behind the Lancashire Champion at the distance, Bianca Pederson of the Blackpool Wyre and Fylde athletic club.
Darren who is the reigning Yorkshire men's under-17 Javelin champion, came very close to a inter county winning performance, with a best throw of 48.30 metres, while the winner Ryan Higginson, of Wirral Athletic Club, the Merseyside number one ranked thrower, just shaded Darren with 48.34 metres.
Both Becky and Darren made a valuable contribution to the overall success of the Yorkshire under-17 teams, which finished first men's team and second women's team.
