McCarthy shines in Whitby victory
WHITBY 3rds bowlers Mark McCarthy and Andrew Menzies shone in their team's dramatic two-wicket win against Forge Valley 4ths in last night's Murray Brown & Son Cup final at Flixton.
Youngster McCarthy snapped up figures of 5-19 to earn the man of the match award, while Menzies also bowled superbly to bag 4-24 as Valley were dismissed for 104.
Teenage opener James Ledden led the way with the bat for the Ayton club, smacking a fine 41, while his fellow junior Joe Bradshaw weighed in with a forceful 28 for Valley.
Whitby struggled to get going in their run-chase, opener Rikki Lawrence and Steve Collier both hitting 14 runs, as the keen bowling of teen ace Liam Glaves helped peg Whitby back.
Glaves finished with figures of 4-20, and it would have been a five-wicket haul but Whitby's skipper Duncan Lawrence, batting at number 10, was dropped with the score at 97.
The captain went on to hit the winning runs, a boundary off the final delivery of the 19th over, and ended on 10 not out, sharing a crucial ninth-wicket stand of 15 as Whitby edged home.
Melvin Brown, of Murray Brown & Son, handed the awards to the players in front of the sizeable crowd after the game and said that it was the best-ever Murray Brown final.
