Lyth eyeing up tour spot

SCARBOROUGH'S Yorkshire ace Adam Lyth is confident he will gain a place on an England Winter tour in the coming weeks.

The opening batsman, who was the first player to reach the 1,000-run mark in the LV County Championship this season, has been constantly linked with a call-up to at least the England Lions squad for their Winter tour of Australia.

There have been calls from some quarters in the media for Lyth to be given a surprise call-up to the full England side for the highly anticipated Ashes tour this Winter in Australia.

These calls intensified recently as England opening batsman Alastair Cook struggled for form at the crease, leading to many calling for his place to come under more scrutiny.

But a century from the Essex man against Pakistan seems certain to have saved his place in the side for the Ashes, and it looks likely that Lyth will have to settle for a place with the England Lions side, captained by his fellow Yorkshireman Andrew Gale.

Lyth, who will turn out in Yorkshire's CB40 semi-final against Warwickshire Bears at North Marine Road on Saturday, said: "I'm pretty sure I'll make it on to a tour at some point.

"I think the squads get announced in the coming weeks and if I don't get in there, I'll just have to come and try again next year.

"I've had a good year this season. I have scored over 1,300 runs so I am no mug with the bat.

"I'm a good player and I know I just have to keep scoring runs.

"I know the selectors have been watching us recently, we have a lot of players in contention for call-ups here.

"I'm confident I'll get a chance at some point but I just have to stay focussed in the meantime."

Yorkshire's semi-final clash gets under way at 12.45 on Saturday.
