Leeds United put back Pickering visit

PICKERING Town's pre-season campaign has been hit by the late postponement of tonight's home game with Leeds United.

The match was scheduled to go ahead at Mill Lane this evening, but due to alterations to United’s pre-season programme it will now take place on Tuesday August 11.

Town chairman Tony Dunning said: “It is a big blow, we have put a lot of effort into the preparation for this game, but at least we will get another chance to play them next month.”

The Pikes’ next game is now at home to Whitby Town on Tuesday, 7.45pm ko.

Pickering were looking forward to the Leeds game as a chance to continue their superb start to the pre-season. They earned a 2-1 win at Westella & Willerby last Tuesday thanks to goals from ex-Selby ace Christian Fox and fellow new recruit Josh Greening – younger brother of right-sided midfielder Ricky.

Town then coasted to a 4-0 win at Huntingdon Rovers on Thursday night thanks to goals from Tom Adams (2), defender Rob Eeles and Richard Whitfield, and Mark Wood’s side followed it up with a 3-2 success at Northern League side Horden Colliery Welfare on Saturday.

Whitfield and Josh Greening were on target again at Horden, as well as trialist striker Paul Provins, who led the line for Scarborough Saturday League champs West pier last season.

Assistant boss Sean Chapman has been impressed by the impact that Josh Greening, who starred for Scarborough Town last season, has made since signing for the Pikes.

“Josh has played well in pre-season, scoring twice in the three friendlies. He is a handy young player who may force his way into manager Mark Wood’s plans for this season.

“He has signed on for us, but he can also be registered for Scarborough Town in the Wearside League.”

Chapman added: “His older brother Ricky is just getting back to fitness after a hamstring injury that has bothered him for the best part of nine months, so hopefully he can force his way back into the squad as well.

“Paul Provins is on trial from West Pier, and he took his goal well against Horden.”
