Leading honours for young guns
ATHLETICS and table tennis led the way among the Scarborough and District Sports Council's junior awards.
It was athletics which dominated the under-18 male section with Danny Schofield picking up the top honour ahead of fellow Scarborough Athletic Club and Sixth Form College teammate Robbie Pickering.
Distance runner Schofield represented England after impressing for Yorkshire, while under-18 runner-up Pickering has had a year to remember with success at schools and county level in the discus and shot putt.
Loftus and Whitby AC’ star Grace Rodgers was tops at girls under-16 level after leading the way against her rivals in the 800m at Yorkshire and schools level.
Runner-up in the under-16s was Graham School’s Alex Lee, who has enjoyed success at table tennis and in the pool for Kingfishers.
Table tennis has had another tremendous year, winning the top awards in the girls under-18 section and the boys under-11s.
Scarborough Sixth Form College student and Premier table Tennis Club member Rebecca George has represented the county at junior and senior level and won Scarborough’s senior ladies title.
She got the top girls under-18s vote ahead of Filey School’s Kerry-Louise Hammond, a star performer in both football and netball.
Star boys under-11 honour went to table tennis’ Keegan Barstow.
Now a pupil at Graham School, he has won individual and team honours in his sport, and edged out runner-up Freddie Schmuck, who has shone at football and cricket.
Cricketer Oliver Stephenson was the top youngster at boys under-16 level. The Filey School batsman has represented his Yorkshire age group and played for Scarborough 1sts. He was given the nod ahead of Scalby’s Josh Schofield, the Scarborough AC 1500m runner.
Swimming was out in front among the girls under-11s, with 10-year-old Barrowcliff pupil Jace Cappleman making a name for herself by becoming Scarborough Swimming Club champion and record-breaker in all five strokes.
Runner-up in the category was Eskdale School’s Scarborough and District Motor Club member Nikita Smith, who has had a trophy-winning season in motocross trials.
At under-14s, football and bowls players took the top awards.
Pindar’s Jack Bird was the star boy, with the 12-year-old Scarborough Bowls Centre player representing Yorkshire under-25s and the county men’s B team. Runner-up was table tennis’ Thomas Harrington.
Among the under-14 girls, Bethany Mead, of Caedmon School, picked up the top honour for outstanding success with Middlesbrough Ladies Football Club. Gymnastics Amber-Rose Wilson was the runner-up.
