Late goal a stunner for Boro
THE stuttering start to the season for Scarborough Athletic continued as they suffered last-gasp heart-ache at Rainworth.
Boro did have the chances to bury their opponents, but a mixture of the woodwork, poor finishing and solid goalkeeping kept the score goalless, until a late goal gave Rainworth the win and kept Brian France's men rooted to just the one point.
It seems Athletic just need to find the finishing touch that was with them for so much of last season. And with midfielder Scott Phillips catching the eye as a second-half sub, after returning from suspension, it won't be long until they do.
The opportunities came thick and fast after a lively start from the hosts, who just seemed content to kick anything in a red shirt.
Efforts from Richard Medcalf, new boy Phil Danforth and Dave Thompson went close, before Boro looked certain to take the lead when bumbling referee Steve Smith finally managed to make a decision.
He pulled up Rainworth for a back-pass, but Ryan Blott blazed over when the ball was rolled to him eight yards from goal.
Ref Smith certainly got it wrong just before the break when Medcalf was nearly cut in two by a Lee Patterson tackle. After a consultation with his linesman, he punished the offence with a measly free-kick when a red card was the only option.
Boro should have been clear by the hour mark, as Medcalf was twice denied in a melee, before Gary Hepples' shot was brilliantly saved.
Hepples went on to hit the post in the latter stages as it looked as though Boro would turn the screw, but a scramble polished off by Danny Naylor at the other end, put paid to their hopes.
