A LATE strike pegged Scarborough Town back to a 2-2 draw at Redcar Rugby Club despite the visitors dominating last night's game.
This result maintains the young side’s unbeaten start to life in Teesside League division two, but they left Redcar in rueful mood last night, having squandered a hatful of chances and only getting a share of the points from a game they d
ominated.
Head coach Mitch Cook said: “I was happy with the lads’ display but we should have won the game after creating that many chances.
“Mark Barber had an excellent game in midfield, while Dean Craig also played well.”
Town’s defence failed to deal with a deep cross in the sixth minute of the game and Redcar’s Adam Preston netted from close range.
The visitors then stepped up a gear and were only denied by last-ditch tackles on Wayne Brooksby and Neil Thomas. The equaliser arrived on 17 minutes when Thomas won a great header, setting Robbie Hawkes clear to beat the keeper with his fourth strike of the season.
The second half began in similar style, with Wayne Brooksby’s pacy runs and movement causing problems.
Home keeper Keith Hill made a superb save to keep out a misdirected clearance from his own centre-back Matthew O’Brien.
Brooksby put Town ahead after 54 minutes with a fine solo goal, intercepting the ball and going clear of the defence before rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the net.
Town defender Tom Hickin headed wide from yet another corner, and Georgie Rose threaded a ball through the Redcar back line for Hawkes to bring another great save from the home keeper.
Sub Darren Clough joined the action and sprinted through the defence on three occasions, setting up Brooksby for a shot which whistled over the bar, then striking the far post with a curling shot, and finally bringing another great save from the keeper.
With Town squandering chance after chance, it seemed inevitable that Redcar would capitalise and after 82 minutes Jamie Graham broke away on the left to finish in fine style to square the game at 2-2.
Town begin their home campaign on Saturday against Grangetown at McCain Sports (12noon ko).
Town: Clark, Patterson, Craig, Perry, Hickin, Rose (Danby 70), Ramm, Barber, Thomas (Clough 56), Brooksby, Hawkes.
