Late Phillips strike ends Boro's poor run
THERE was last-gasp joy for Scarborough Athletic as they finally ended their poor run.
After just one win in five outings, a 90th minute strike by midfielder Scott Phillips was enough to wrap up the three points on a chilly Winterton evening.
In a tale of two halves, Boro looked certain for nothing going into the interval, though after the oranges things did look so much brighter.
On a carpet-like surface, it took Boro a full 45 minutes to get the ball on the deck, but when they did it paid full dividend.
The confidence, that was heavily lacking in the first half, returned in abundence and Boro set Winterton onto the back foot.
In truth though, Boro could have taken the lead after just five minutes, when Ryan Blott danced clear on the left and crossed for strike-partner Craig Palmer, but his header grazed the top of the bar.
After this, Boro’s players retreated into their shells and Winterton rampaged, with only the heroics of keeper Glen Powley keeping them at bay.
The stopper produced a string of amazing saves from Liam Wilkin, who should have handed the hosts a clear advantage.
Though Powley’s finest moments came when denying the spritely Danny Frost. The Boro keeper brilliantly tipped away a rising shot and then denied the attacker when he was sent through on goal.
All Boro had to offer from the final 40 minutes of the opening period was a swirling Michael Price strike from distance, which was grasped by Jamie Allan.
Things were said in the Boro changing room at the break, and this coming together made a huge difference.
From the whistle Boro played their football from back to front and the game took a massive turn.
Phillips was the first to benefit from this, though his half-volley after a spill from Allan, flew inches wide of the upright.
Striker Palmer then planted a header against the post with the keeper well beaten.
Winger Mark Griffin was handed a new lease of life on the right, and his bursts into the box soon led to Blott drilling just over and Phillips seeing a shot pushed away.
Defender Dave Hartas also got in on the act, but once again the target was missed my a matter of centimetres.
Things could have all gone wrong though, as Boro keeper Glen Powley almost undid all of his good work in the first half.
He slipped when making a clearance, though full-back Price was there to mop up.
With time ticking away, despite all Boro’s attacking force, the game looked to be slipping towards a draw.
But with 30 seconds of normal time remaining, Boro snatched the victory.
Sub Joel Hartley made his first real impression when he tore clear on the left. The winger’s cross was nodded to midfielder Phillips on the edge of the six-yard box, and he duly despatched it into the net,
The final whistle showed how much the victory meant to Boro’s players, as they celebrated a three-point haul next to the Humber as they had just months earlier, when they booked promotion into the NCEL’s top flight.
