Scarborough Town seal move into Wearside - COMMENT

SCARBOROUGH Town will be playing Wearside League football next season.

The George Pindar Community Sports College side were voted into the set-up at last night's annual general meeting.

This switch comes after Town clinched the Teesside League second division title during their first season in existence.

Mitch Cook's men will now face a number of lengthy journeys during the new campaign, as they must travel to the likes of Cumbrian-based Windscale and Cleator Moor Celtic.

There will also be a derby clash with former Scarborough League outfit Kirkbymoorside.

Town vice-chairman Nigel Wood told the Evening News this morning: "It was a bit nip and tuck because of the distance some of the teams will have to travel, but we got there in the end.

"I had to do a five-minute presentation and a few teams were asking a lot of questions, but they were all impressed by the fact that this is a community project.

"It is great news for the town, the club and Mitch and the lads, who can now push on a further rung up the football ladder.

"This is an extremely well-run league and we are looking forward to taking our place in it."

Houghton Town, of Houghton-le-Spring, were also voted into the league, though the Wearside constitution is yet to be fully confirmed by the league's committee.
