Pitch black - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

THE lights went out on Scarborough Town's hopes of hosting floodlit football last night.

Around 250 disappointed fans had to be refunded following a floodlight failure before the Wearside League clash between Town and New Marske at the George Pindar Community Sports College.

The College had rented eight portable floodlights for the game in a bid to eat into Town's hefty fixture backlog.

But one of these floodlights failed just before the 7.30pm kick-off leading to a delay.

This light was finally fixed just ahead of the 8pm deadline set by Stockton referee Phillip Yates, but a second went out, bringing an early end to the evening's action.

Disappointed Town boss Mitch Cook said: "We are all very upset by the whole situation, the lads are absolutely gutted.

"We had everything set up for the game and then something happened that was completely out of our control.

"It leaves us with another game that we have to fit into our already busy schedule of matches.

"We are trying different ways to combat this backlog of fixtures, and we will continue to do that.

"This whole thing highlights the fact that there is no floodlit football facility in or around the town, because of which, the whole football world is laughing at us."

Town chairman Hugh Bellamy added: "There was so much effort and expense to put this game, but now we have been left with nothing but disappointment."

Referee Phillip Yates was happy for the game to go ahead before the lights went out.

He said: "There wasn't a problem with the lights, until they stopped working.

"We had been looking forward to the game as there was a good crowd, but unfortunately we couldn't give them any longer to get the problem sorted."
