Pier see off Ayton to move top
ANDY Spivey’s West Pier side moved to the top of the table with a comfortable 3-0 win at Ayton.
In a scrappy first half, Pier managed to create several chances, with both Tommy Barker and Paul Provins missing with headed efforts.
But Pier were 1-0 up when Provins’ shot was parried by Ayton keeper Simon Rigg, only for Neil Thomas to slam home the rebound.
The scores stayed at 1-0 until the hour-mark when referee Nigel Trotter awarded the visitors a soft penalty, and Thomas stroked home his second.
And their win was confirmed when substitute Mike Hartnett rocketted an effort into the roof of the net for 3-0.
Newlands remain in the hunt after they comfortably defeated Cayton Corinthians 6-0.
Newlands were dominant from the first whistle and had countless opportunities to take a comprehensive lead.
But Cayton’s 16-year-old stand-in keeper Tom Sixsmith pulled off some good saves to keep the score at 1-0 at half-time, courtesy of an Eric Hall strike.
Hall made it 2-0 shortly after the break before goals from Josh Hakings, Chris Dove and Stuart Bates made it 5-0.
Hall then grabbed his second to complete a comfortable afternoon for Shaun Mancrief’s men.
Mancrief picked out centre-back Jason Harrison as their star man.
In a huge upset, Hunmanby United did their chances of avoiding the drop the world of good by stunning Eastfield St James 4-3 on their own patch.
In a fairly even first half, goals from Tom Rees and Chris Duley had the scores level at 2-2.
Duley got his second to make it 3-2 before Eastfield hit back again, only for Duley, usually a full-back, to complete his hat-trick and complete a stunning result for United.
Hunmanby secretary Brian Robson said: “It is a fantastic result for the club. Eastfield are a tough side to turn over on their own ground.”
Fishburn Park moved out of the bottom two with a potentially crucial 3-2 win at Westover Wasps.
Wasps were 2-0 down before goals from Tom Clark and Liam Buglass fired them level.
But the Whitby outfit netted after a mistake by Jono Lorrains to secure a win that could keep them afloat in the top flight come the end of the season.
