Happy times for ex-Boro defender - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
FORMER Scarborough FC defender Kevin Nicholson is still on cloud nine after a magical double celebration.
Not only has the 28-year-old just become a dad for the first time, but he was also a part of the Torquay United team that booked promotion to the Football League via the Conference National play-offs.
Nicholson, who played 82 times for Scarborough between 2004 and 2006, is now preparing for a switch back into league football for the first time since he left Notts County for the McCain Stadium five years ago.
He said: "It was a crazy week. The theoretical question was put to me by my wife of whether I would sacrifice playing at Wembley for the birth of my daughter, but luckily Jessica popped out the weekend before.
"Playing at Wembley was a great experience. We played their the season earlier in the FA Trophy, but that was more about the day out so we lost our focus.
"This just seemed like another game for us and we went on to win and book promotion, which was fantastic.
"To win at Wembley is a great feeling, you have to savour it because it may never happen to me again. I have been playing for 12 years now and this is the first thing I've really won.
"I'm loving it at Torquay because it is a great place and, no disrespect to Boro or Forest Green, but it's also nice to be with a club that is challenging for honours in the Conference.
"Now hopefully we'll be able to push on in a similar sort of way to Exeter City, who have gone through to be promoted once again."
Nicholson still has fond memories of his time at Scarborough and he has been following the progress of both Athletic and Town when he's been able.
"I still speak to Brian Hodgson the kitman and Mitch Cook, and they keep me informed of how things are going," added the full-back.
"It is great to see both teams doing well and long may it continue. I have played for a good few teams and I can definitely say that my time at Scarborough was one of my most enjoyable.
"I do still chat with plenty of ex-Boro players like David Pounder, Chris Hughes, Steve Baker and Mark Quayle, as well as others.
"I'm doing my coaching badges at the moment and at some point I'll be looking to move back up north - so who knows, maybe I'll be able to take over as manager of a Scarborough club when they are back in the Conference."
