SCARBOROUGH Athletic keeper Kevin Martin came in for lavish praise from boss Rudy Funk after Saturday’s NCEL Premier derby success against Pickering Town.

Martin made a tremendous penalty save from Tom Adams when the score was at 1-1, a stop that Funk feels could have been the game’s turning point.

The Boro chief said: “When players do well then I pat them on the back and when they don’t I criticise them. There is no criticism I can give out at all after this game because I was very happy with what we contributed. I would like to say well done to all of the players.

“The player that stood out and earned the biggest pat on the back was Kev.

“People can say that Kev guessed it right and that Tom Adams put it at a good height for the keeper, but if it is struck well - as it was - then it is never easy. That was a terrific save.

“It was 1-1 at the time and if you go 2-1 down then the whole thing changes, so as well as being a great save, it was a very important save.

“For me though I don’t think it was a penalty, but there you go.”

Another positive for Funk was the goals and link-up of Ryan Blott and Adam Lee.

Blott bagged twice and Lee popped up with his fourth goal in three games since joining from Armthorpe.

He added: “The partnership between Ryan and Adam is working a treat and long may that continue.

“They both looked very sharp and they took their goals very, very well.”

The final huge positive for the Boro chief was the fact that the fans really got behind his side to cheer them on to a derby victory.

“The big picture for me is a good performance, a win and the fans behind the team. That is what I want to see,” said Funk

“When I go one day I want to leave that legacy behind. I want there to be a bond between the players and the fans, that is what you need.”
