Former Boro defender Baker all set for dinner re-union

FORMER Scarborough FC defender Steve Baker is looking forward to getting reacquainted with some of his old colleagues at Scarborough Town’s Sportsmen’s Dinner later this month.
Baker, who initially joined the club on loan from Middlesbrough in 2001, signed permanently for Boro in 2002 and remained at the McCain Stadium until 2006.
The defender counts his time at Boro as being some of the best years of his career and is pleased to be catching up with some old faces at Town’s annual dinner, at which his former manager Russell Slade is the guest speaker.
Baker said: “It will be good to get together with some of the lads I used to play with at Scarborough.
“Obviously we all went our separate ways when we left the club and it is always nice to catch up with mates you haven’t seen for quite some time.
“My spell at Boro was one of the best times of my career, particularly Russell Slade’s first two seasons in charge.
“When I was at Middlesbrough I was sat in a dressing room with some big names and world-class players, but my first couple of years at Scarborough were definitely my most enjoyable in football, both on and off the pitch.
“I really miss the atmosphere and the craic - the banter with your teammates is the first thing that you miss when you retire from playing football.”
Baker was still playing as recently as last December, but was forced to hang up his boots shortly before Christmas due to work commitments.
He added: “I got asked to sign for Norton & Stockton in the Northern League at the start of the season.
“I’d been working away for a year prior to that and hadn’t played but I had kept in good shape so I thought why not.
“I really enjoyed it, the standard was good and I was playing with and against a lot of decent footballers, but I have to work a lot of Saturdays now so I had to pack in playing.”
Baker will be joined at the Sportsmen’s Dinner at the Crown Spa Hotel on February 25 by a host of former Boro favourites.
Joining guest speaker Slade will be fellow ex-managers Mark Patterson and Mitch Cook, former players David Pounder, Jason Blunt, Karl Rose, Tony Hackworth, Shaun Rennison and kit-man Brian Hodgson.
