Scarborough join the Evening League ahead of new campaign

SCARBOROUGH Cricket Club’s entry into the Andy Hire Scarborough and District Evening Cricket League was confirmed at the league’s AGM last night.
Scarborough will start the 2012 season in division D, alongside fellow newcomers Wykeham ‘C’.
Scarborough will play their home fixtures at North Marine Road and Scarborough College, while Wykeham will be based at Scalby CC’s Burniston Road ground.
Nicky Sumpton who is Scarborough CC’s second team captain and will be playing for the club’s Evening League side said: “Playing Evening League cricket is a great opportunity for the club to get more of our younger players playing more cricket.
“The side will be made up predominantly of young players. We are restricted in how many first team players we are allowed to play, but it is not our intention to be turning up for matches with a side full of first team players anyway.
“The aim is to allow our young players the chance to get some more experience of senior cricket at a good standard under their belts.
“A lot of the players at the club have been wondering why we don’t have an Evening League team for a while, so it is good news that we will be playing on a night from now on.
“We are certainly aiming to progress up the divisions as quickly as is possible.”
Heslerton will also be competing in the Evening League in 2012.
Heslerton were due to join up from the Ryedale Evening League in 2013.
However, the resignation of Hospitals last week left a gap in division C to be filled and when asked, Heslerton accepted the opportunity to join the Scarborough League a year earlier than planned.
The Evening League committee and member clubs also adopted a number of rule changes last night.
On dark evenings and by mutual consent from both captains, it will now be possible to reduce the number of overs to be bowled by each team to a minimum of 12 eight ball overs.
A rule that will leave the judging of all wide balls in divisions C and D to the discretion of the umpires was also adopted.
All league and cup games, apart from cup-finals, will now commence at 6.15pm.
The maximum number of overs that a bowler is permitted to bowl during a game of 15 eight ball overs was increased from three overs to four overs.
To avoid promotion and relegation play-off matches being required, teams that are tied on points will be separated in terms of how many runs they have made per wicket lost over the whole season.
