Farrant set to sign off in fine style

FORMER Forge Valley pace ace Mark Farrant is shining in what looks set to be his last season down under.

Farrant is in his second season for Brisbane-based Valley District CC's third grade side, and after a disappointing finish to last term, he is planning on signing off in style.

He claimed 16 wickets at 17.44 last time out before picking up a troublesome hamstring injury, which ruled him out after Christmas.

This time around the injury-free quickie has grabbed 30 wickets at an average of 20.07, helping his side to fourth in the standings.

Farrant said: "My season went very well prior to Christmas last year, but then I injured a hamstring so the second half of the season was not so good. We finished sixth, so missed out on a place in the finals, which was a blow.

"This season is going a lot better though. So far, I have taken 30 wickets and we are currently sitting fourth with three games to go before the finals."

He added: "I am keeping busy away from the cricket field as well. I am no longer a personal trainer, as I couldn't give the amount of time that was required to be successful. Instead, I am lifeguarding and coaching cricket.

"I also coordinate all of the fitness training for my club's first grade side, and I have done work experience with the strength and conditioning coach of the Queensland Bulls, the State cricket team.

"I still keep in touch witha few of the Valley lads - it was a shame that they were unable to retain the trophy last season, but it sounds like a few of the other sides are stronger than they were.

"I think I will be heading back to the UK after this season. I'm thinking about qualifying to be a PE teacher, as my degree and experiences over here are ideal starting points for such a career."
